On Monday, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the New York Knicks 115-111 in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. It was the Spurs’ first win of the series, which New York currently leads 2-1.

Game 3 of the Finals saw a raised hostility. From Jalen Brunson being assessed a flagrant foul to on-court dustups, the mood shifted. The two teams engaged in trash talk and physical play throughout the contest.

After the game, multiple Spurs fans were attacked by angry Knicks supporters on the streets of New York.

One viral video showed Knicks fans attacking someone simply because he was wearing a Spurs jersey. Violence broke out near Bryant Park, where a Knicks watch party had taken place. Some Knicks fans even attacked the Spurs’ team bus after the game. Another video captured Knicks supporters forcing a Spurs fan to take off his Wembanyama jersey, which they later ripped to shreds and set on fire.

Wembanyama was asked about these attacks and made his feelings clear on Tuesday.

“I didn’t know that. My thoughts, of course, is that, I mean, we can’t forget it’s a game,” Wembanyama said. “We’re just playing a game out there. And I am all for passion, but to the respect of each other. It’s unacceptable.”

New York reached the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999. This was the Knicks’ first loss of the Finals, so fans were frustrated after the contest.

In recent months, “teen takeovers” have been happening across the country at malls, parks, and parking lots. These rowdy gatherings feature teens disrupting traffic, destroying property, and engaging in violence. Whether last night’s attack was connected to the fad is unclear.

The New York Police Department arrived at Bryant Park to monitor the watch party. There were an estimated 7,000 fans at the event. The NYPD ended up arresting individuals for crimes ranging from assault to criminal possession of a weapon and beyond.

Wembanyama appeared surprised about the attack. However, fans becoming violent is not limited to Knicks supporters, the NBA, or America, in general. For example, it’s not uncommon to see fan violence at soccer matches overseas.

Looking ahead, the Knicks and Spurs play Game 4 on Wednesday night. With a win, New York will take a 3-1 lead, while San Antonio seeks to tie the series at 2-2.
