Victor Wembanyama Injury Update: How Long Will the Spurs Superstar Be Out?

The Spurs just caught another tough break following the latest update on rising superstar Victor Wembanyama.

What had been shaping up to be a breakout season for Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs — with the third-year star leading the team to a spot among the Western Conference’s best — has taken an unfortunate turn.

The latest update on Wembanyama casts a shadow over what had been an encouraging and entertaining campaign thus far.

What’s the Latest on Spurs Star Victor Wembanyama?

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Wembanyama will be out for some time after suffering his latest calf injury.

“San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has a left calf strain and is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks, sources tell ESPN,” Charania said.

Twelve games into the season, Wembanyama is averaging 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, four assists, 3.6 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 50.2% from the field and 34.5% from 3. His production has inarguably played a role in the Spurs starting the season 9-4.

That production cannot be easily replaced, which casts a dark shadow over what’s to come for the Spurs while he’s absent. Even worse is that this is becoming a problem so early in the season, which is very distressing, as Wembanyama’s sophomore season ended prematurely due to a blood clot in his right shoulder.

San Antonio currently plays in a Western Conference that features several teams vying to make some noise. If there’s one player the Spurs can’t afford to lose for an extended period, it’s Wembanyama. By the time he gets back, there’s a possibility they might be fighting for the play-in.

Wembanyama has already delivered multiple eye-catching performances to start the season, including a monster outing with 40 points and 15 rebounds, a game where he had nine blocks, and a triple-double.

The Spurs had just welcomed back De’Aaron Fox, and many were eager to see how he would mesh with a fully healthy roster. Wembanyama’s injury delays that evaluation, and now the team will have to wait a few weeks to see its true potential.

Up next for San Antonio are the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday and the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday. The Spurs then embark on a four-game road trip to close out the month (against Phoenix on Nov. 23, Portland on Nov. 26, Denver on Nov. 28, and Minnesota on Nov. 30), return home to face Memphis to start December, and play five of their next six games on the road.
