Victor Wembanyama Exits Early vs. Knicks, Returns To Bench in Final Minutes

With New York leading 102-96 early in the fourth quarter, Wembanyama soared for a rebound. Unfortunately for San Antonio, the 7-foot-4 big man came down awkwardly on the play, appearing to hyperextend his left knee.

Wembanyama exited with 10:32 remaining and limped his way to the locker room. However, on his way, the one-time All-Star repeatedly assured fans that he was fine.

While Wembanyama didn’t return to the contest, he eventually made his way back to the bench in the final minutes to watch his shorthanded squad improbably close out the Knicks 134-132.

The 21-year-old dominated in limited action (24 minutes), finishing with 31 points, 13 rebounds, one assist, one block, and two 3-pointers, shooting a hyper-efficient 10-for-12 (83.3%). In doing so, he became the fourth Spur in franchise history to record 20 outings with 30-plus points and 10-plus rebounds.

Despite losing Wembanyama, the Spurs were able to cap off their comeback from a 19-point deficit behind a career-high 36-point effort from forward Julian Champagnie. He shot a blistering 11-for-17 from 3-point range (64.7%), setting a franchise record for triples in a single game.

Latest on Wembanyama’s Injury Status

As for Wembanyama’s status moving forward, doctor of physical therapy and NBA injury insider Evan Jeffries speculated that his best-case scenario is likely a hyperextension or bone bruise. Jeffries added that the worst-case scenario would be an ACL tear, though Wembanyama’s swift return to the bench eased concerns about a possible serious injury.

Until further notice, Wembanyama can be considered questionable for Friday’s road matchup against the Indiana Pacers (6-28). The Spurs (24-9) have gone 15-6 with Wembanyama and 9-3 without him this season.

Update: Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, as many anticipated, Wembanyama “suffered a slight hyperextension in his left knee” and “initial tests came back negative and showed no major injury.”
