Tyronn Lue Dishes on Bringing Darius Garland off the Bench in His Clippers Debut so He ‘Doesn’t Have To Play With Kawhi’

Tyronn Lue says he will bring Darius Garland off the bench for now, easing him into action with the Lis Angeles Clippers.

After missing 19 consecutive games, Darius Garland is set to make his debut with the LA Clippers. Garland has been sidelined since January due to a toe injury sustained while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Ahead of the trade deadline, the Clippers traded James Harden for Garland. Since then, fans have anticipated a new era of Clippers basketball with Garland joining Kawhi Leonard. Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue recently addressed reporters regarding his strategy for Garland’s debut.

Tyronn Lue Wants to See What Darius Garland Can Do on His Own

The Clippers are scheduled to face the Golden State Warriors on Monday, marking Garland’s first appearance with the team this season.

Given the late stage of the 2025-26 season, concerns have been raised about potential chemistry issues, particularly with Garland adjusting to sharing the court with Leonard.

Despite these challenges, Lue has outlined a strategy to ease Garland into the rotation.

In a pregame interview, Lue explained that he intends to separate Garland and Leonard initially. Lue wants to evaluate Garland’s ability to lead the team independently. He noted that both players are ball-dominant, which could affect Garland’s rhythm as he adapts to the new lineup.

“Just bringing him off the bench so he doesn’t have to play with Kawhi,” Lue said. “So he can kinda find his own rhythm, his own timing, and just try to run everything through him. Just being aggressive, our pace picking up. That’s the thought process behind bringing him off the bench

“That’s what he’ll be doing until we get his minutes up. Then, of course, you know he’s gonna be the starter.”

With Garland now part of the Clippers, his impact on the team’s standing in the Western Conference will be closely monitored.

For now, Koby Sanders will continue to start at point guard, having provided steady production with 7.0 points, 2.5 reboundsm, and 1.7 assists per game this season.

However, as Lue pointed out, Garland is expected to assume that role soon, with the Clippers banking on his averages of 18.0 points and 6.9 assists on 45.1% shooting to translate, viewing him as a key piece of their future.
