Tyrese Haliburton grew up around basketball, thanks to his parents’ dedication. His father coached a women’s team and often brought Tyrese to the court, while his mother made it a priority to support him from the sidelines.
Tyrese Haliburton’s Father Started Coaching Him From a Young Age
His father, John Haliburton, has served as a basketball referee and women’s basketball coach. From his early years, he often brought young Tyrese to his coaching sessions, where he got involved in the basketball world early. He also introduced Tyrese to legendary players like Magic Johnson.
During his childhood, John helped him improve his skills. He mentioned that John was the one who put the ball in his hand when they appeared on Inside the NBA. He has mentioned meeting the women his father used to coach. During their chat with the Inside the NBA crew, he revealed that his father made him watch the film of five-time NBA champion Johnson growing up.
He joined the hall of farmers like Johnson and John Stockton by scoring back-to-back 20 points and 20 assists during the 2024 season, and this feat didn’t go unnoticed. Johnson congratulated him on X by calling him ‘little Magic.’
He said during a press conference on July 6, 2023, “My dad coached a girl’s basketball team when I was born, and I meet these girls all the time. They’re like ‘Oh, I held you when you were a baby, they always say when I was barely old enough to crawl, my dad would make sure one half of the court was reserved for them and one half of the court was reserved for me.”
Haliburton’s Mother, Brenda, Supported Him at Nearly Every Game
John is not his only supporter; his mother, Brenda, has attended his every game while growing up. During an interview with Travis Hines of Ames Tribune, he said, “My mom has always come to everything, There have been nights when we played in Milwaukee, so she would go and work and leave with me with a teammate or coach for a night, but make it to the game the next day, whether it was the afternoon or night.”.
According to further reports from the Ames Tribune, Brenda has only missed five games, but this number can be less. The first game she missed was the Texas Tech game, and it was not on purpose; Tyrese revealed, “The plane wouldn’t take off because of the weather; that was the first game she ever missed. She was super bummed out. I was like, ‘Mom, it’s OK.’ She felt really bad about it.”
Both John and Brenda regularly attend his games in Indiana. One of John’s most notable appearances was during the 2024 NBA In-Season tournament.
