Trae Young was supposed to be the centerpiece of a transformed Washington Wizards franchise when he was acquired in early January of this year. But it seems like his debut season in the District has hit a full stop. On Saturday, March 21, the Wizards’ front office delivered a medical update that effectively signaled the end of a frustrating 2025–26 campaign for the four-time All-Star guard.
Trae Young Injury Update: Guard Sidelined With Dual Injury
This latest blow follows a chaotic week that also saw teammate Anthony Davis still sidelined with lingering hand ligament damage. The Wizards’ 2025–26 season has been nothing but dismal, following the 16-game losing streak that tied with the franchise record in December 2024.
The team is currently near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 16-53 record, and the focus has officially shifted from playoff aspirations to the NBA Draft lottery.
Trae Young sustained an injury during the third quarter of the Wizards’ matchup against the Golden State Warriors on March 16 at Capital One Arena. Young and Warriors guard Will Richard were involved in a collision that sent Young to the locker room.

But what was assumed to be a standard collision has evolved into a multi-layered recovery process. The Wizards’ PR team clarified the situation and gave an update about Trae Young’s injury via their official social media channels.
They stated, “Young reinjured his right quadriceps, sustaining a contusion during the third quarter of the game against Golden State on March 16. Related imaging, due to ongoing back pain, confirmed lower back irritation. Both injuries are being treated conservatively and will not require surgery at this time. Further updates will be provided as appropriate.”
It appears Trae Young is likely done for the 2025-26 NBA season. Some assume this is not about an actual injury and is instead about the 2026 NBA Draft lottery.
It won’t be the first time this season that a team is intentionally tanking to get better lottery odds. But without confirmation, no claims are valid.
According to their current conference standing, the Wizards have a 14% chance of landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, which could boost their roster efficiency, as Cooper Flagg did with the Dallas Mavericks.
How Young Fits Into the Wizards’ Long-Term Rebuilding Strategy
The Wizards’ front office acquired Trae Young and Anthony Davis in the hope of nurturing them as the offensive and defensive cornerstones of the team. While Young has played five games in his Wizards jersey, Davis has yet to make his debut.
With only a handful of games remaining in the regular season, Wizards fans would surely be disappointed as they hoped to see the Young-Davis duo ignite the court.
With playoff dreams gone for this season, the Wizards will now lean into rebuilding the roster. They will prioritize a winning mindset for the 2026–27 season rather than rushing toward a quick, unstable success culture.
