‘They All Clowns’ — LaVar Ball Doesn’t Hold Back on NBA Analysts Getting Personal With LaMelo Ball for Injuring Bam Adebayo

LaVar Ball fired back at Nick Wright, Jason Whitlock and Erik Spoelstra after Wright called LaMelo Ball a "clown" for tripping Bam Adebayo in the play-in.

What should have been a celebratory time turned out to be stressful for the Ball family. LaMelo Ball hit the game-winner in overtime, helping the Charlotte Hornets survive 127-126. Their season’s hopes live on, but the play that dominated every conversation wasn’t this. It was Ball grabbing Bam Adebayo’s ankle in the second quarter and Adebayo hitting the floor.

Bayo couldn’t make a comeback. The NBA fined LaMelo $60,000. Story over, right? Wrong! That’s when the commentary started. And his father, LaVar Ball, has seen enough.

LaVar was frustrated. It showed on his face. His reaction to his son being mocked around the league? It was swift, loud, and clear. Ball Sr. came right out swinging the haters away, saying don’t mess with the Ball family.

His first target: Nick Wright. He said, “Has Nick Wright ever looked in the mirror? I bet you if you look in the dictionary right now and look up ‘clown,’ you’re going to see two things. One, it’s going to be somebody with some long hair on the sides and a big nose. Yep, that’s Nick Wright, a clown in itself. He’s been a clown ever since I knew him.”

His next target was Jason Whitlock. “And I know his tag-team buddy too, Gritlock. He looks like a clown too, puffy cheeks, a big round nose, and a big belly to match.”

He continues, “Yes, I’m calling them all out. They all clowns. So don’t ever curl your lips and say a Ball boy’s a clown, because you know you a clown.”

He also addressed Spoelstra directly. “Don’t make all these excuses so much that you don’t want to make an excuse. Then why are you making one? Win the game and call it in.”

LaVar stood by his son, calling that play an act of self-defense. “If somebody’s falling on top of me, best believe I’m going to put my hands up and do all kinds of stuff. That’s just how the Balls are taught.”

What Did Nick Wright, Jason Whitlock, and Erik Spoelstra Say About LaMelo Ball?

LaVar Ball was angry because all three major names called out his son for the injury Bam Adebayo sustained.

FS1 analyst Nick Wright was among the first ones to call him out. “That young man is a clown, and has been a clown forever, and will never not be a clown,” he said.

He even doubled it down on X, writing, “After LaMelo intentionally injures Bam and plays one of the most erratic elimination games we’ve ever seen, in the same season he’s been a menace on the streets of Charlotte, if calling him a clown is too far, I don’t know what to tell you.”

On the show, Wright’s co-host Chris Broussard did try to push back on this narrative. But Wright was headstrong and held his ground. He called LaMelo “an immature, coddled teenager” and said he wasn’t sorry.

Jason Whitlock kept the overall messaging of his points clear. He said, “LaMelo Ball is a goofball,” he said.

Soon after the game, Erik Spoelstra did not hide his frustration after the big loss. He said, “I don’t think it’s cute. I don’t think it’s funny. I think it’s a stupid play. It’s a dangerous play,” he said. “Tripping guys, shenanigans. He should have been thrown out of the game for that. There’s no place in the game for that.”

That’s when LaVar got involved through his podcast show.

What Really Happened Between LaMelo Ball and Bam Adebayo?

LaMelo first drove to the rim, taking a hit to the head. Just as he went down, Adebayo ran past, and Ball grabbed his ankle.

Adebayo just lost his balance right then, crashing hard onto his lower back and tailbone.

He had played for only about 11 minutes and did not return to the game. The Hornets took advantage of this situation and won the game in overtime.

Ball finished the game with 30 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds. He even apologized for the mistake he made during the game. He said,  “I got hit in the head and didn’t really know where I was,” he said. “I’m going to check on him.”

The NBA reviewed the play and fined Ball $35,000 for “unnecessary and reckless contact” and an additional $25,000 for profane language during a live postgame interview. But absolutely no signs of any suspensions.

The Charlotte Hornets are all set to face the Orlando Magic on Friday. If they win, the Hornets are going to the playoff stage for the first time since 2016.
