After three weeks of deliberation, LeBron James has finally made his decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. Will the 2026-27 NBA season be the last one for the future Hall of Famer?
He’s already played an NBA record 23 seasons and is set to extend that mark to 24 with this upcoming campaign. But is there some leeway for James to play two more years?
LeBron James May End Up Playing For 76ers for Two Years
James did sign a two-year contract worth a total of $8 million. So the foundation is already laid for him to play two seasons in Philadelphia. But is that what the 41-year-old wants?
According to ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania, there’s a “real chance” James plays the full two seasons rather than one.
“LeBron James made it very clear it wasn’t going to be about money, and at the end of the day it’s not. My understanding is there’s a real chance he plays both of these years. Next year is guaranteed with a player option.”

The fact that James has secured a player option for the second year of his contract is a fascinating twist. If, for some reason, he plays out the season with the Sixers and realizes it’s just not what he was looking for, it gives James the opportunity to test free agency again next offseason and play with everyone’s hearts again.
Interestingly enough, if James does stick around for the full two seasons, it could be a good sign for Philadelphia’s title chances. After all, in each of the previous times James signed elsewhere, he went on to win the NBA Finals in his second season with his new team. Could that same blueprint be repeated in Philly?
Everyone affiliated with the 76ers hopes it doesn’t take two years for this roster to gel. Boasting a star-studded starting five of Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, James, and Joel Embiid, the 76ers have a group they can win with right away.
Now it’s just a matter of making the complementary pieces fit and hoping this group can build the right type of chemistry right away. Having a pair of former championship winners in Brown and James should help the 76ers get off to the right start.
Ultimately, the biggest challenge may just be staying healthy, a common theme in Philadelphia’s shortcomings, but perhaps James’ arrival can help eliminate those fears, too.
