‘That’s a Lot of Picks’ – NBA Analyst Questions Magic’s Bold Decision To Trade for Desmond Bane for 4 First-Round Draft Assets

The NBA preseason tipped off with a jolt as the Orlando Magic pulled off a stunning trade for Desmond Bane. In a move that quickly sent shockwaves through the league, the Magic acquired the sharpshooting wing from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four first-round picks, and a first-round pick swap.

The trade signals a clear shift for both teams. Memphis, long in need of a shakeup, chose to retool by stockpiling future assets. Orlando, on the other hand, made a bold move to address a glaring need and stake its claim in an increasingly competitive Eastern Conference.

Kendrick Perkins Weighs in on the Desmond Bane trade

One person not entirely sold on the deal was Kendrick Perkins. The former NBA big man and current ESPN analyst shared his two cents during an appearance on ‘Road Trippin’,’ offering praise for Bane’s fit but raising eyebrows at the price tag.

“I’m all in for it. I’m all in for it if you’re the Orlando Magic,” Perkins said. “I think it’s a hell of a pickup. When you think about what they have over there, Paolo Banchero is a rising young superstar in the making.”

He added, “And you think about the spacing that Desmond Bane can provide, the shooting, not a defensive liability, so he’s going to fit the culture. But I’d be damned if I would have gave up four unprotected picks. I mean, damn.”

Perkins also compared the package to past blockbuster trades, saying, “I don’t believe they got that much for Jrue Holiday with the Boston Celtics. Like, that’s a lot of picks.”

“Desmond Bane is a great addition. I applaud the Orlando Magic for going all in, especially with the Eastern Conference being wide open next year… It better work.”

While Bane helps solve Orlando’s urgent need for perimeter shooting, many people, including Perkins, are questioning if the Magic gave up too much for a player who has never been an All-Star.

Why Did Magic Bet Big on the Two-Way Star?

The Magic had a clear reason for going all-in for Desmond Bane. Last season, they finished dead last in three-point percentage.

In Bane, they are getting one of the league’s most efficient perimeter scorers. He has a career average of 41 percent from deep and posted shooting splits of 48.4 percent from the field, 39 percent from three, and 89 percent from the line last season.

Beyond the numbers, Bane offers versatility. He can initiate offense, create shots off the bounce and serve as a secondary playmaker. His presence should take pressure off Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, giving Orlando a more balanced and dynamic attack.

Bane is 26 years old and under contract, aligning with the timeline of Orlando’s current roster.

With the offseason just beginning, the Magic made one of the first major moves before other teams entered the trade market. The timing indicates a proactive approach by Orlando’s front office, especially with the Eastern Conference landscape remaining fluid.
