What Did Mat Ishbia Reveal About Steve Nash’s Addition to the Suns?

Ishbia took to X to make the announcement. “Steve Nash was an amazing player and exactly what the Phoenix Suns are all about,” he wrote.

“His grit, toughness, and winning mentality have defined our organization in the past, and I’m so excited to share that Steve is formally joining the @Suns as a senior advisor and will help us define our future for years to come!”

Nash was selected by the Suns as the 15th overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. He spent two seasons in Arizona before he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. His All-Star selection with the Mavs and a return to the Suns proved to be the defining highlight of his career.

The prolific guard made a name for himself as one of the best playmakers in the league after returning to the Suns. He won back-to-back MVPs with the side after leading them the a first-place finish in the West in the 2004-05 season. Nash followed it up with another solid 2005-06 season, averaging 18.8 points and 10.5 assists to win his second.

Nash’s Inclusion Adds to a String of Bold Offseason Moves

Nash’s addition will benefit a young Suns unit now built around Devin Booker. Ishbia and the front office made some bold moves, breaking up their ‘Big 3′ of Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal.

They also added former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Jordan Ott after letting go of Mike Budenholzer soon after a disappointing past season. Nash’s experience, game awareness, tactical acumen, and sharp IQ will be key for Ott, Booker, and the team to stay competitive in a stacked West.

While the Suns’ roster on paper doesn’t necessarily see them as title favorites, a seasoned name like Nash can perhaps help them make the playoffs and a deeper run. Nash’s new role comes after his brief stint as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

He later co-hosted the ‘Mind the Game’ podcast alongside LeBron James in the offseason. Amazon Prime also picked him for its NBA coverage in the upcoming season. It remains to be seen if his presence will see the Suns emerge as surprise contenders.
