After three weeks of uncertainty that had the entire basketball world wondering, the Golden State Warriors and Steve Kerr have their answer. The legendary head coach is not going anywhere, and the franchise that has defined his legacy just made sure of it with a new historic deal.
ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news on Thursday, and for Warriors fans who spent the better part of a month holding their breath, the wait is finally over.
Steve Kerr Is Here to Stay, With Stephen Curry
According to Charania, Kerr has agreed to a new two-year contract to return as head coach of the Golden State Warriors. The deal was negotiated by Dan Eveloff and Rick Smith of Priority Sports and confirmed by Charania alongside Anthony Slater and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.

After three weeks of extensive conversations between Kerr and Warriors ownership, the two sides agreed to continue what is now the franchise’s longest-tenured coaching partnership. This will be Kerr’s 13th season as Warriors head coach when the 2026-27 campaign tips off.
Per ESPN, the new deal keeps Kerr as the NBA’s highest-paid coach on an annual basis, a title he held this past season at $17.5 million.

The news ends what became one of the most genuinely uncertain coaching situations in recent memory. After the Warriors were eliminated by the Phoenix Suns in the Play-In Tournament on April 17, Kerr stood at the podium and sounded as if he was bidding goodbye to Dub Nation.
Lacob publicly backed Kerr throughout the process, and Curry made his position clear after the loss in Phoenix, stating that all the major stakeholders wanted Kerr to return. The feeling was mutual, and the conversations that followed over three weeks ultimately produced a deal that keeps the legendary partnership intact.
The contract’s two-year term is meaningful. It aligns almost precisely with Curry’s timeline, as the 38-year-old is under contract through 2026-27 and eligible for an extension this summer that could carry him through 2028-29 under the over-38 rule.
Kerr finishes his 12 seasons in Golden State with a record of 604-353 and four championships. He is now under contract to add to both numbers.
