Steve Kerr Makes Feelings Clear on Erik Spoelstra Succeeding Him As Team USA Coach

Steve Kerr speaks on Erik Spoelstra as the new Team USA coach, praising his readiness as he takes charge of the 2027 and 2028 campaigns.

As Erik Spoelstra steps into the pressure-packed role of head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team, Steve Kerr, his predecessor, has made one thing unmistakably clear: there is no better choice.

The longtime Miami Heat coach was appointed on Oct. 14, 2025, and will guide Team USA into the 2027 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics, inheriting both expectations and a legacy of gold.

Steve Kerr Expresses Confidence in Erik Spoelstra’s Promotion

Kerr, who coached Team USA to fourth place at the 2023 World Cup and then Olympic gold in Paris in 2024, offered nothing but confidence in his successor.

Before the Golden State–Miami matchup, Kerr spoke candidly about Spoelstra’s qualifications.

“He was a great choice,” Kerr said, as reported by AP News. “He’s one of the great coaches of all time. Great awareness of what FIBA is about, the difference between coaching a team for seven weeks and coaching one for nine months, all of that stuff. He’s just got his finger on the pulse of it all. He’s going to be great.”

Their history adds weight to the endorsement. Spoelstra served on Kerr’s staff during both the 2023 and 2024 tournaments, rising quickly through the USA Basketball structure.

He previously coached the Select Team in 2021 during a COVID-affected training camp in Las Vegas — a pivotal assignment that helped prepare the national team for Tokyo.

Meanwhile, his NBA résumé speaks for itself. Spoelstra has been at the helm of the Miami Heat since 2008, guiding the franchise to two championships and compiling a 795–578 coaching record.

Within the Heat organization and around the league, his reputation for adaptability, calm under pressure, and tactical brilliance has only grown. These are the qualities essential for the high-stakes, short-window challenges of international basketball.

Spoelstra Begins Work As World Cup Qualifying Starts

Spoelstra’s tenure begins immediately. Later this weekend in South Florida, the United States officially opens its campaign to qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Doha, Qatar. A 12-man roster selected for the opening games of the 12-game qualification cycle will gather at the University of Miami before flying to Nicaragua to begin play on November 28.

The qualifiers will continue through March 2027, setting the tone for a cycle that ends on home soil at the Los Angeles Olympics.

While Spoelstra steps into the national spotlight, Kerr remains focused on his NBA duties. The Golden State Warriors are 9–8 and sitting eighth in the standings, steady but searching for rhythm as the season unfolds.
