Warriors HC Steve Kerr Candidly Reacts to Stephen Curry’s Latest Injury Setback

Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors fell 104-100 to the shorthanded Houston Rockets during Wednesday’s NBA Cup home matchup. However, much of the attention centered on the two-time MVP’s condition after he exited with a leg injury late in the fourth quarter.

Following the game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr candidly reacted to Curry’s initial diagnosis as his squad gears up for the potential absence of its top player.

Golden State led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter before Houston stormed back behind sophomore guard Reed Sheppard’s career-best 31-point performance. The sharpshooter stepped up with Rockets superstar forward Kevin Durant (personal) unavailable to will his undermanned team to victory.

Making matters worse for the Warriors, Curry suffered a leg injury while attempting to take a charge from Houston’s Amen Thompson with 3:24 left in the contest.

Upon coming up limping, the four-time NBA champion tried to play through his discomfort before checking out with 35.2 seconds remaining and heading to the locker room. He finished with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists, two blocks, two 3-pointers, and seven turnovers, shooting only 4-for-13 (30.8%).

Curry was later diagnosed with a right quad contusion, with an MRI still to come, an injury that could cost him more time.

“It obviously changes everything, our rotations, how we’re playing, who we’re playing through, so we’ll see,” Kerr said postgame.

Still, the veteran coach took an opportunity to breathe a sigh of relief about the 11-time All-Star seemingly avoiding a serious setback.

“When I heard it was a quad, I was actually kind of relieved,” Kerr shared. “Better than an ankle or a knee. So, hopefully he can recover quickly and be okay, but we gotta hold down the fort.”

Curry’s exact return timeline won’t be determined until he undergoes his MRI to determine the severity of his injury. If he ends up sidelined, Golden State may struggle to stay afloat without its leading scorer (27.9 points per game), given its 22nd-ranked offensive rating (113.2).

The Warriors (10-10) have gone 9-7 with Curry and just 1-3 without him this season. Fortunately for them, they next host the struggling New Orleans Pelicans (3-16) on Saturday, presenting a prime opportunity to get back in the win column, with reserve guard Brandin Podziemski possibly in line for more minutes.
