When the Stephen Curry family gets together, you know it’s going to be a wild ride. Well, this one had some spicy throwback moments.

In a recent episode of the Straight to Cam podcast, Golden State Warriors star Curry’s mom, Sonya Curry, got real about the dating rules she laid down for her boys growing up. And let’s just say, “Rule of 16” wasn’t just a suggestion, it was law in the Curry household.

Stephen Curry’s Mom Lays Down the Law of “16”

So, here’s the scene: Sonya Curry was a guest on the Straight to Cam podcast hosted by her daughter Sydel Curry-Lee and Stanford star Cameron Brink. And as all good mom convos go, things escalated fast.

When the topic of dating came up, Sonya casually dropped the bombshell that she had a firm rule: no dating before 16. Period. End of story.

“They had a rule of 16,” she said with that no-nonsense mom energy. And while that may sound pretty standard, it quickly turned into a hilarious and slightly awkward moment when she tried to recall who Stephen’s first girlfriend was. “The day [Steph] turned 16 was when he told us about… what’s-her-name?” she laughed. Well, that’s brutal.

But hold on, Sydel wasn’t letting it slide. Apparently, the story’s got layers. According to her, the Warriors guard may have started dating before 16. Just didn’t spill the beans ‘til later. Classic move, right?

This back and forth turned the podcast into a real ‘Wait, What?’ situation, with Sydel throwing shade and Sonya standing firm on what she thought the timeline was.

Double Standards? The Girls Call It Out

Then things took a sharp left turn. When the conversation shifted to whether Sydel had to wait longer than her brothers to start dating, Brink casually stirred the pot, asking, “Was Sydel only allowed to date at 18?” Sonya went “No.” Sydel hit back with “Yes.” And boom, cue the record scratch.

Turns out, while the Curry boys just had to follow the “16 rule,” Sydel felt like she had to jump through flaming hoops just to grab a smoothie with a partner. She claimed Sonya didn’t even meet Stephen or Seth’s girlfriends until the relationships were basically public. Meanwhile, Sydel had to run a full background check and schedule a family dinner just to hang out.

Sonya tried to explain it away with, “But you’re girls. So it has to be a little bit different.” Well, that didn’t go over well. Both Sydel and Cameron hit her with the classic “NO! NO!” response. It was pure comedy gold.

In the end, though? No hard feelings. The conversation was all love and laughs. And looking at how the Curry siblings turned out, Sonya clearly did something right.
