Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has often credited his longevity to hard work and adaptability. Still, at a recent event, he shared that one of the biggest lessons came long before his first NBA game.
As a college prospect attending elite summer camps, Curry said NBA veterans LeBron James and Chris Paul gave him advice that would forever shape his approach to his career.

Stephen Curry Reflects on Lessons From LeBron James and Chris Paul
Speaking with Fortune about his new book Shot Ready, Curry revealed the message that stuck with him. “Everyone’s goal was the NBA, but once the draft happens, everything resets,” he recalled them telling him.
Players who dominate in college or high school are forced to start from scratch in the pros. “You could have been the best on your team, but when you join the NBA, you start from zero. How are you going to reinvent yourself?”
Curry emphasized that this idea became his framework for growth. It pushed him to double down on his habits. He showed up early, refined every detail of his shot, and stayed confident even through failure. “Work ethic was my superpower. It was my skill,” Curry explained, adding that resilience and self-belief were tested every single day once he entered the league.
The two-time MVP has since become the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers, a four-time champion, an Olympic gold medalist, and one of the game’s most influential figures. Yet, he said that moment of advice reminded him early on that talent alone wouldn’t be enough.
How Did Stephen Curry Build A Legacy Beyond The Court?
In the same interview, Curry also linked the lesson of reinvention to life after basketball. His book explores his rise on the court and how he applied those same principles.
Alongside his wife, Ayesha Curry, he co-founded the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, focusing on childhood nutrition and education. Through his holding company, Thirty Ink, Curry has expanded into media, golf, bourbon, and apparel, generating more than $170 million in revenue in 2024.
His long-term partnership with Under Armour, reportedly valued at over $215 million, cements his role in shaping the brand’s basketball identity. More recently, Curry took on a role as a performance advisor for Google, contributing to health, hardware, and cloud technology projects.
Even with all of these ventures, Curry said his mindset is to stay present in basketball while keeping the door open for future opportunities. “Team ownership … who knows what that will look like?” he added.
As he heads into his 17th NBA season, the advice from James and Paul continues to resonate. For Curry, it’s a universal lesson. Once the slate resets, success depends on how well you adapt, work, and reinvent yourself. Whether on the court or in business, he’s made that mantra the center of his story.
