The Miami Heat made history tonight as the first No. 10 seed to advance past the play-ins and into the playoffs.
In a high-stakes play-in game that had the potential to shape the Eastern Conference playoffs, the Heat secured an unforgettable 123-114 victory over the Atlanta Hawks in overtime. While the thriller showcased the Heat’s team chemistry and effort, one player stood out and ultimately sealed the game in the most dramatic fashion: Davion Mitchell.
Davion Mitchell Showed Out in Heat-Hawks OT Thriller
With both teams fighting to secure the No. 8 seed in the East and face the Cleveland Cavaliers in a seven-game series, Mitchell emerged as the hero for Miami. The 26-year-old guard contributed 16 points, three rebounds, and five assists on a 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc.
But it was far more than Mitchell’s stat sheet that solidified him as the man of the hour — it was his clutch plays down the stretch that allowed the Heat to ultimately cross the finish line before the Hawks.
Between Mitchell’s dagger 3 and defensive efforts that drew two offensive fouls, he stepped up to the big stage and gave his team the ammunition to finish the game on top.
Even the notoriously hard-to-please Stephen A. Smith couldn’t help but heap praise on Mitchell’s performance.
“Way to step up, kid. Two bigtime 3’s. Draws two bigtime offensive fouls,” tweeted Smith. “Loving what he’s doing. But it ain’t over yet.”
OMG. @hoopculture13 for the @MiamiHEAT . Way to step up, kid. Two bigtime 3’s. Draws two bigtime offensive fouls. Loving what he’s doing. But it ain’t over yet.

Smith is right. While the Heat found success in the play-in tournament, the Eastern Conference will be far from a cake walk. The franchise has a history of being the underdog, most recently in 2023 when Jimmy Butler III and the Heat stunned the league with an upset over No. 1 seed Milwaukee Bucks, but the Cleveland Cavaliers are no joke.
Finishing the season with the league’s second-best record, just behind the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Cavaliers will look to get past their first-round opponent as swiftly and cleanly as possible.
Not to mention, the Heat no longer boasts a superstar in Butler following his departure to the Golden State Warriors.
Mitchell’s performance has undoubtedly set the stage for what promises to be an exciting postseason run, and if his play continues at this level, he may very well be a key factor in the Heat’s playoff success.
Still, the road ahead is steep. Against the formidable Cavaliers, Miami will need every ounce of cohesion, grit, and luck it can muster.
