Shaq Reveals a Heated Confrontation Caused the Lakers Legend to Walk Away From $50 Million

Los Angeles Lakers legend Shaquille O’Neal stands tall as one of the greatest athletes to ever play in the NBA. His remarkable size and strength wowed fans every time he stepped on the court during his prime years, garnering numerous sponsorships throughout his Hall of Fame career.

However, he couldn’t say yes to every sponsor deal he received. This was certainly the case during the early years of his superstar career, specifically with popular shoe brand Reebok.

O’Neal signed with Reebok when he entered the NBA in 1992 after the Orlando Magic selected him first overall in the draft.

He released his first sets of shoes with the brand while shining as an elite young star in the league. When the time came for negotiations regarding a new contract in 1995, O’Neal recalled the conversations he had with a mother while hosting an episode of his show, “The Big Podcast.”

“This beautiful lady was dragging her son,” O’Neal revealed. “I thought she was coming for an autograph. And she starts saying, ‘You’re charging our babies for the shoes.’ You know how we’re raised, we’re not allowed to talk back to the sisters.”

O’Neal explained how he allowed the mother to express her frustrations about the prices of the shoes. After that interaction ended, he went back home to speak with his mother, Lucille, to discuss the issue at hand. He thought she would be on his side, but Lucille surprised him with the opposite stance.

“I’m thinking my mama is going to be on my side. She’s like, ‘Baby, the lady was right. Your shoes do cost too much.’ She’s like, ‘Remember, you ain’t never had no shoes that cost more than $40,’” O’Neal recalled.

“I called Reebok and said, ‘Hey, we’re not going to renew.’ I had $50 million on the table,” O’Neal revealed.

O’Neal was aware of the difficulty in making that decision. Despite that, he figured out a solution by partnering with Walmart as his main distributing partner whenever he released a new pair of shoes during his career.

The move proved to be a remarkable success. After passing up a $50 million contract with Reebok, O’Neal ended up selling over 470 million pairs of shoes since parting ways with the brand.

O’Neal can feel quite proud of how his choices early in his career turned out. He continued to dominate the NBA as one of the greatest stars of the 1990s and 2000s, winning four championships from 2000 to 2006. Retiring in 2011, he walked away as one of the most elite centers to ever step foot on the hardwood.
