Who Are Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Parents, Charmaine and Vaughn? Get To Know the Thunder Star’s Family

The OKC reached the NBA Finals as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took them forward with determination as we explore his family, who instilled it in him.

Every kid is a reflection of their parents, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander resembles his father and mother. SGA and his family embody the Canadian spirit of athletes, are hardworking and intelligent, and have a knack for coming out of their shells and influencing the proceedings.

The guard became the 2025 MVP because of his hard work and dedication to the sport. His physical attributes are on point because he comes from a family of athletes. He uses his body to draw fouls, has a unique ability to get to the free-throw line, and drains those buckets from the charity stripe. Although he faces criticism for that move, he’s become an expert in drawing fouls.

As fierce as he might appear on the court, off it, Gilgeous-Alexander is a complete family man. Let’s explore the pillars that are behind what he is today.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Comes From an Athletic Family

Born on July 12, 1998, in Toronto, Canada, SGA was raised in Hamilton by Charmaine Gilgeous and Vaughn Alexander. Two years later, his brother Thomasi came into the world, and they have a cousin brother in Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s father, Vaughn, attended Georges Vanier Secondary School and became a star by winning the Toronto city championship. The former high school basketball star, who coached him at a young age, built the mental fortitude you see today. Moreover, Vaughn taught his sons to play basketball and also taught SGA’s cousin, Alexander-Walker.

“I’m very, very competitive number one. I love ball, and I watch a lot of ball, I let them, I made them watch a lot of ball. But my biggest thing was like with them, I just wanted them to always go at each other because that’s how I got better in my areas,” said Vaughn, who appeared in the YAAACE Time Podcast in June 2024 to discuss his son’s upbringing.

On the other hand, Gilgeous-Alexander’s mother, Charmaine, was a superstar sprinter. At 21, she represented Antigua and Barbuda at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. She completed the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.48 seconds, but her competitiveness remains intact, even today.

Gilgeous-Alexander explained, “She always lets me know that I’ll never be a better athlete than she is. She’s cocky too. She thinks she’s the best at everything.” But according to The Athletic, their parents are separated. Gilgeous-Alexander adores his mother and often credits his parents for giving him all the tools to succeed.
