Thunder Superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Makes Major Off-Court Announcement Amid Injury Absence

Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recently made a major off-court announcement. Here's what you need to know.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has undoubtedly evolved into a global star. His stardom in the NBA has undoubtedly helped him establish his presence worldwide. While some mega stars tend to forget where they came from, it appears that SGA still loves his hometown.

Growing up, Shai lived in Hamilton, Canada. Given how he was raised there, Gilgeous-Alexander has recently made a major off-court decision.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Is Now a Part-Owner of TD Coliseum

On Feb. 3, Gilgeous-Alexander, unfortunately, sustained an abdominal strain when the OKC Thunder took on the Orlando Magic. This led the team to sideline him for at least 5 games.

Since being sidelined, apparently, SGA has been busy with some off-court work. As of Monday, Gilgeous-Alexander is now part-owner of TD Coliseum in his hometown of Hamilton.

As of this writing, Oak View Group, the developer behind TD Coliseum, has yet to reveal the financial terms of Gilgeous-Alexander’s investment. It’s also worth noting that the building’s interior was named Ares Atrium, a tribute to the Thunder star’s son.

It’s clear that SGA loves his hometown. In a recent press release, the NBA’s reigning MVP shared his thoughts on investing in TD Coliseum.

“Becoming part of the ownership group at TD Coliseum is really personal for me,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “Growing up in Hamilton shaped who I am, so having the opportunity to help build something special in my hometown means everything.”

While SGA is making waves outside the NBA, many Thunder fans are wondering when their superstar will return. According to several reports, he is expected to play again after the All-Star break. The earliest possible return could fall on Feb. 20, when OKC takes on the Brooklyn Nets.

Given that Gilgeous-Alexander won’t be playing for a few games, we’re not entirely sure how it will affect his team and his individual performance.

Prior to his abdominal strain, Shai was leading the league in the MVP race, looking to win the award in back-to-back seasons. However, given how dominant the Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Dončić has been all season, there’s a slight possibility he could overtake him in the race.

Dončić is sitting in second place currently, while averaging 32.8 points, 8.6 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.4 steals. Comparing those numbers to SGA’s 31.8 points, 6.4 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.3 steals, Dončić has a tiny edge over him on paper.

But given how the Thunder have led the entire NBA standings all season, chances are SGA could retain his spot in first place despite his short absence.
