Russell Westbrook’s offseason journey in 2025 was nothing short of dramatic. His exit from the Denver Nuggets was unexpected, leaving him without a team for weeks before he found a home with the Sacramento Kings.
The whole ordeal cast doubt on Westbrook’s place in the league, with some even suggesting retirement for the NBA star. Of course, there was more to Westbrook’s decision, including his own choices and what the Nuggets wanted.

Sacramento Kings’ Russell Westbrook Opens Up About Denver Nuggets Exit
With the 2025-26 season underway, Westbrook returned to Denver as a Kings player. Speaking about the fans’ response and his time in Denver, Westbrook shed some light on his exit.
And while things worked out, it was the Nuggets who didn’t want to sign Westbrook for another season.
“The truth is that they didn’t want me back,” Westbrook said after the game. “It ain’t up to me. God always has a plan. Be patient. Not up to me. They don’t want me. That’s OK. Somebody else do.”
He also discussed the player option he had declined, explaining that he wasn’t going to stay with a team that didn’t want him. “They told me not to (pick it up). I don’t go anywhere I’m not wanted.”
That said, one can’t simply write off Westbrook’s time with the Nuggets. He averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game, shooting 44.9% from the field and 32.3% from 3-point range.
Even though Westbrook’s career has been somewhat inconsistent since his days in Oklahoma City, few expected him to leave the Nuggets after just one season.
One reason could be the team’s postseason run. Unable to keep up with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Oklahoma City Thunder, the Nuggets fell in the conference semifinals. Signing a player like Westbrook is often meant to boost playoff chances, especially as the Nuggets and Nikola Jokić aim to win another title since 2023.
Westbrook Credits Nuggets Fans for Their Support
While Westbrook’s time in Denver ended unceremoniously, the 36-year-old veteran was grateful to the fans.
“The fans, I mean, since I’ve been here, they were great. Always gave me great energy. I gave them the same. I came out, competed at a high level every night. I was grateful for them for the ovation, so I appreciate that,” Westbrook said.
Many fans had hoped Westbrook would stay with the Nuggets and were disappointed to see the veteran leave after just one year.
However, with the Kings built around Domantas Sabonis, there’s hope for a longer run for Westbrook in Sacramento.
With a 2-5 record, the Kings are currently 13th in the Western Conference. Their next matchup — against the Golden State Warriors — is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 4.
