Just two years since the 2023 NBA Draft, where the San Antonio Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama with the first pick, the Spurs were once again in a familiar spot. While the Dallas Mavericks picked the generational talent this time around, the Spurs will not be disappointed as Dylan Harper could be the guard for their future.
Adding the Rutgers star to their promising core, headlined by Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox, is sure to turn the tide in Texas. And while Harper’s promise was being praised across the league, a sly comparison of the rookie’s salary with his father, NBA Legend Ron Harper, was not a pleasant sight. The five-time champion seemed to be unfazed.

Ron Harper Provides a Fitting Response
The post by Legion Hoops compared Ron Harper’s career earnings ($35 million) to his son Dylan’s rookie contract ($56 million). The post, which lacked context such as inflation and the general expansion being one of the reasons for these earnings, could make the legend’s career not seem as big as it was. For Ron, the post didn’t matter, for he had seen his son achieve the same dream he achieved back in 1986.
You all are worry about the wrong things in life.. the joy of having my kids chase a dream and make it work that’s awesome. Enjoy

The five-time champion responded, “You all worry about the wrong things in life.. the joy of having my kids chase a dream and make it work that’s awesome. Enjoy.” Dylan couldn’t be a part of any of his dad’s title celebrations as the guard was born in 2006, five years after his father retired.
Ron still shared the gospels of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant’s hard work with his son when discussing what it takes to be in the NBA, and the resulting mentality is why the Rutgers guard was a no-brainer for the Spurs.
For Ron, the day was special as a father, knowing he had been a part of his son’s journey. He believed the post focused on the “wrong things in life”. But even if the focus is on the finances, the story behind the numbers is revealed upon a comparison to Michael Jordan.
Jordan earned approximately $94 million from the NBA in his career. Dylan’s $56 million contract is more than half of that. The comparison between arguably the greatest basketball player and a rookie’s contract shows just how much the league has grown. Accounting for multiple factors, including inflation, the contracts have ballooned, making for hefty contracts from the beginning.
Ron’s career salary reflects his value when we consider the fact that the average salary in the NBA ranged between $0.87 million and $2.92 million during the 90s, when Harper was active. Harper earned over $4 million in three of his 11 seasons in the league, with the highest earning season coming with the Chicago Bulls in 1998, where he earned $5.2 million.
While the senior Harper’s legacy in the league remains solidified, Dylan now seeks to create his own legacy in San Antonio. And with the Spurs’ pieces all seeming to align this season, the window for a championship might just have opened up for the team.
