After finishing as the No. 2 seed in a stacked Western Conference, the Rockets were bounced in the first round by the Golden State Warriors in seven games. That early playoff exit exposed a big issue with their roster: half-court offense.
Houston Rockets Playoff Struggles Highlight Offensive Concerns
In that seven-game series, Houston failed to crack the 100-point mark three times. They even scored under 90 points in two of those losses.
In today’s NBA, that usually means you’re not winning. Head coach Ime Udoka now heads into the offseason with a clear priority: find more consistent offense in slower playoff settings.
Ironically, one of the best scorers in NBA history might be up for grabs.

As the Phoenix Suns weigh their options, Kevin Durant has reportedly listed the Rockets as one of his preferred trade destinations. Any deal would likely include Houston’s No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Trade the Pick or Keep Building?
But not everyone is sold on moving that pick. The latest Pro Football and Sports Network mock draft connects Houston to Noa Essengue, a high-upside forward from Germany. Analyst Cam Mellor says Essengue might not be a plug-and-play guy just yet, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t worth the wait.
“There’s no question about the talent,” Mellor wrote. “This one’s more of a long-game play for Houston.”

Essengue, just 18 years old, would need some time to develop his game at the NBA level. With a 6’10” frame, he has the body and athleticism to become a modern-day forward. But he still has to bulk up and improve on both ends.
“At 6’9″, there’s plenty of room for him to bulk up and develop even further, especially on the defensive end and as a perimeter threat,” Mellor added.
Essengue’s Upside Intrigues Scouts
What stands out most about Essengue isn’t just his size; it’s how he sees the game. Mellor praised his instincts and fluidity, calling him “versatile” and “instinctual.” He even said the German prospect could become a “serious difference-maker.”

Now the Rockets must decide: chase a win-now piece like Durant or take the slower route by developing young talent like Essengue.
There’s no clear answer, and both paths come with risk. But one thing is certain. How Houston handles this offseason will shape the future of the franchise for years to come.
