‘They Should Be Doing Everything They Can’ – Rich Paul Sends Strong Message to Lakers About LeBron James’ Future

LeBron James' agent Rich Paul has sent the Los Angeles Lakers a clear message about the NBA legend's future.

LeBron James is 41 years old, in the final year of his contract, and currently carrying the Los Angeles Lakers to a 3-0 first-round playoff lead against the Houston Rockets without Luka Dončić or Austin Reaves.

That combination has become one of the most debated topics in basketball, and the noise around where he plays next season has not slowed down, even with the playoffs in full swing.

Now his agent, Rich Paul, is stepping into the conversation directly, and he has a clear message for the Lakers organization.

Rich Paul Sends a Message to Lakers About Keeping LeBron James

Speaking on his Game Over podcast, Paul did not hold back about what he believes the Lakers should be doing when it comes to their aging superstar:

“When you have a player like LeBron James, you keep that guy a part of your organization. The Lakers should be delighted that he played them, number 1. Also, they should be doing everything they can to make sure he’s a part of that organization going forward.”

The language around “being a part of the organization going forward” deliberately leaves the door open to a front-office role, a front-of-jersey ambassador position, an ownership stake, or any number of structures that would keep James tethered to Los Angeles even after he retires from the NBA.

Paul has been floating this idea for a while now, and framing it as something the Lakers “should be doing everything” to keep the greatest player of our generation.

James is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He opted into his $52.6 million player option last season, knowing this offseason would be entirely open-ended, and the league has been buzzing ever since.

Multiple credible reporters, including ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, have strongly linked him to the Cleveland Cavaliers, with some going so far as to say there is a strong chance James returns to Cleveland to close out his career if he is willing to accept a pay cut. The Warriors and Knicks have also surfaced in the rumor mill as potential destinations.

Paul pushed back on all of it earlier this month, saying on the same podcast that none of the reports was true and that even James himself did not yet know what was happening. But these latest comments feel less like a denial of the outside noise and more like a deliberate message aimed at the Lakers’ front office.

Paul is essentially reminding Rob Pelinka and the organization that retaining James in some capacity is not just a sentimental decision; it is a business one.

Whether the Lakers act on Paul’s message remains to be seen. But with James still dominating playoff basketball at 41 and carrying a short-handed team to the brink of a sweep, it is hard to argue with Paul’s message.
