It has been almost two weeks since ESPN’s Shams Charania announced that LeBron James will not return to the Los Angeles Lakers next season.
The future Hall of Famer has a big decision on his hands regarding where he spends, what might be, his final NBA campaign. His agent, Rich Paul, revealed why James’ decision will take longer than most signings.
Rich Paul Reveals LeBron James’ Situation Differs From Other Free Agents
Many free agents are motivated by contract talks. However, James does not care about the financials after 23 seasons in the league. Charania detailed the 22-time All-Star’s situation on “Get Up” on July 2.
“His biggest priority in all this is finding a team where he feels he’s going to have a chance to play meaningful basketball, compete for a championship. My understanding is this will not be a financially driven, money decision,” said Charania.
Paul appeared on the “Nightcap” podcast recently with Shannon Sharpe, Chad Johnson, and Joe Johnson. The founder and CEO of KLUTCH Sports Group explained why James’ non-financial stance makes his decision harder.
“When you remove the money, now you actually have clarity. You never seen an athlete been in this position … I’ve never seen it … You really have to evaluate things a lot differently … We’re never going to be rushed to do anything, and we [expletive] sure don’t care about what nobody has to say or think,” Paul commented.

James has had several teams on his priority list since free agency started in the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, and Cleveland Cavaliers. However, the Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves have thrown their names into the mix as well. Most of these teams have something in common- the ability to sign James and contend for a championship.
Every team on this list, besides two, the Heat and Warriors, got to at least the second round of the 2026 playoffs. However, Miami made a blockbuster move this summer, trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo. This trade immediately vaults them toward the top of the 2026-27 projected Eastern Conference standings. James won two NBA titles with the Heat in 2012 and 2013, but he is hungry for more.
While the Warriors did not execute an all-in move like Miami, they re-signed Kristaps Porziņģis and hope James signs a deal to play with Stephen Curry to make a legendary championship run. Both legends competed against each other for many years. If they win the finals together, it would certainly give James’ career a storybook ending if he retires after next season.
James is “not in a rush right now” to sign what might be his final NBA contract, and Paul did not give fans any hints about a timetable.
“When the man’s ready to make his decision, he makes a decision,” said Paul.
