What Is Deep Vein Thrombosis? Exploring the Return Timeline for Damian Lillard After Possible Season-Ending Injury

With uncertainty about Damian Lillard's injury, a look into the severity of Deep Vein Thrombosis and how long Lillard could be out

The Milwaukee Bucks superstar Damian Lillard has been on a tear this past season. Comfortably settling in as the second option behind Giannis Antetokounmpo, Lillard was phenomenal this season after Milwaukee’s slow start, helping the Bucks to the cusp of securing a playoff seed.

Lillard, who averaged 24.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists this season, is currently facing some serious health concerns. Lillard was ruled out indefinitely due to blood clots in his right calf, otherwise known as Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Lillard has been taking blood thinners, which are reportedly working well enough to stabilize the blood clot. Victor Wembanyama suffered a blood clot injury earlier this season, which took him out for the rest of the year. These injuries are scary, which is why some think Lillard could be out for the remainder of the regular season.

Damian Lillard’s Return Timeline

There’s no official timeline in play for Lillard, especially considering the nature of his injury. DVT can be extremely dangerous and leads to excruciating throbbing pain in the event that you don’t get it checked out and handled ahead of time.

With such a touchy and scary diagnosis, it is possible that Lillard does not take the court again before the year finishes out. While Lillard and the regular testing of the blood clots could work wonders for his overall health, that doesn’t mean he should get back onto the court.

This will be a cautious situation for the Bucks. If Lillard can return to the court without any serious problem or issues for the playoffs, maybe that’s where we see him next?

What Does ‘Out Indefinitely’ Mean for Lillard?

The term ‘out indefinitely‘ can mean a number of things. It could mean three games or twenty games. It just depends on the severity of the reason that you are listed out. There’s no set timetable for the return when someone is listed as ‘out indefinitely.’

The issue with this is that the Bucks are primed for a playoff run, and Lillard’s uncertain status could put a damper on the team going forward in the playoffs. Will Lillard be ready to play by the first round?

If Lillard is not able to play in the first round, what will be the ceiling of this Bucks team in the playoffs? If Lillard doesn’t make it back before the end of the season, should the Bucks be worried about his future?
