Michael Beasley had an interesting NBA career.
Beasley was a highly touted prospect and the No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat after an incredible freshman season at Kansas State.
However, Beasley never quite lived up to the hype for various reasons. Recently, he has been more open about his career, offering insight into his struggles.

Michael Beasley’s Emotional Breakdown Draws Strong Reactions From NBA World
Beasley played for the Heat until 2010, when he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves to clear cap space for the Heat to sign LeBron James and Chris Bosh and re-sign Dwyane Wade to form their Big Three. In 2012, he left Minnesota to join the Phoenix Suns on a three-year deal.
His time with the Suns was brief; he was waived in September 2013 after an arrest for suspected marijuana possession. Soon after, Beasley rejoined the Heat, reached the NBA Finals, and lost to the San Antonio Spurs.
After a season with the CBA’s Shanghai Sharks, Beasley returned to the NBA and the Heat in 2015. He played the 2015-16 season in the CBA with the Shandong Golden Stars, then joined the Houston Rockets for the remainder of the 2015-16 NBA season.
He had one-season stints with the Milwaukee Bucks and New York Knicks before signing with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. Early in that Lakers season, his mother got sick and his cousin passed away. He missed time and was later traded to, and subsequently waived by, the Los Angeles Clippers.
This marked the end of his NBA career, although Beasley continued to play overseas and has participated in the Big 3.
Reflecting on this period with the Lakers, Beasley broke down in tears and talked about how much he was struggling.

He discussed his mother’s cancer, describing his daily FaceTimes with her and his brother. Through his brother, Beasley came to understand the magnitude of what their mother was enduring. He hated that she had to drive herself to chemotherapy at times.
Beasley also brought up his relationship with his mother and the anger he felt toward his parents for his rough childhood. He also spoke about regretting the times he went without speaking to family members, including his mother.
While Beasley was going through the hardest time of his life, he went viral for trying to check into a game while wearing the wrong shorts and the internet and his teammates clowned him.
“They was laughing at me…” Beasley said. “I hated them, man. … LeBron James and Magic Johnson were laughing, too.”
The NBA community has shown empathy for Beasley and were quick to support him. His journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion within sports and beyond.

Many people said they had trouble even getting through the video because they felt so bad for Beasley.
“This is hard to watch,” one influencer wrote. “Jesus”
Stories like Beasley’s remind us that you never know what someone is going through at any time. He was an easy target back then, but with his mother dying and so much family turmoil, it’s easy to understand why he was in that mindset.
