Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham is one of the brightest stars in the NBA right now. But Cunningham doesn’t forget where he came from, especially when it involves his home state of Texas.
Cunningham has bought into one of Major League Baseball’s top franchises.

Which MLB Team Has Pistons G Cade Cunningham Bought into Now?
On Thursday, ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania reported in a post on X that Cunningham has become a minority owner of the Texas Rangers. Why does this matter when it comes to Cunningham? He was born in Arlington, Texas, which is where the Rangers play their home games at Globe Life Field.
“Detroit Pistons All-Star and Arlington, Texas native Cade Cunningham has purchased a minority ownership stake of his hometown MLB team, the Texas Rangers, he told ESPN,” Charania reported.
Cunningham will play in Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif. So far this season, Cunningham is averaging 25.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 9.6 assists, and shooting 46.2% from the floor. From the 3-point range, Cunningham is shooting 33.0% at this time.

Cunningham was the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Pistons out of Oklahoma State in the 2021 NBA Draft. Detroit wrapped up play heading into the break with a 113-95 win over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night. Against the Raptors, Cunningham scored 28 points in 30 minutes of play.
In Monday night’s victory over the Charlotte Hornets, which was highlighted by a massive brawl between Pistons and Hornets players, Cunningham had 33 points in 37 minutes of action.
The Pistons are holding firm in first place in the NBA’s Eastern Conference with a 40-13 overall record. Cunningham has played a big role in helping Detroit steamroll over much of its competition before the break.

Cunningham is buying into a Rangers franchise that is looking to get back on the winning track. Texas has brought in Skip Schumaker, who has previous MLB managerial experience with the Miami Marlins, to take over for Bruce Bochy in the dugout.
Schumaker served as a senior adviser to the Rangers’ president of baseball operations, Chris Young, in the 2025 MLB season. The Rangers won the World Series back in 2023, but have had a tough time getting back into the postseason.
When Cunningham’s NBA season wraps up, he’ll probably have more time to be an avid visitor to the Rangers’ home games. For now, though, Cunningham’s focus is on getting the Pistons into the NBA playoffs and, hopefully, into the NBA Finals.
