Nuggets Superstar Nikola Jokić Heaps Praise on Pelicans Rookie Derik Queen After Career Night

In a recent interview, Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokić spoke about Pelicans rookie Derik Queen's 30-point career night.

As a late second-round pick, few expected Nikola Jokić to emerge as a breakout NBA star. But the Serbian star proved everyone wrong, easily earning himself a spot amongst the league’s all-time centers list.

The Denver Nuggets icon changed how players view the position, with many new NBA rookies modeling their game around him. Jokić’s game has been recognized by the NBA world — especially after winning the NBA title in 2023. Of course, Jokić remains appreciative of newer players, praising their effort at center.

Nikola Jokić Praised Pelicans’ Derik Queen After Stunning Career Night vs. Denver Nuggets

On Wednesday, the Nuggets beat the New Orleans Pelicans 125-118 to increase their season record to an impressive 11-3. And while Jokić led his team with 28 points, the highlight of the day was Pelicans rookie Derik Queen.

Queen scored 30 points (12/18 FG), nine rebounds, two steals, and as many blocks, impressing everyone with his performance. Furthermore, he became the first Pelicans rookie to achieve this feat of scoring 65+ FG% during a game.

Naturally, Jokić was asked about the young center’s 30-point game.

“He’s good, you know. He has some moves. He’s definitely crafty. He’s unorthodox. Great touch around the infield for the game. He’s really…it’s good to see somebody different,” Jokić explained.

When asked if Queen reached out to him postgame, the Nuggets star added: “No…Maybe I didn’t hear it.”

However, the one-time NBA champion joked when asked if Queen actually reminds him of himself. After all, Queen has modeled his game around Jokić.

“I think I’m a little bit taller, but I think there is like a [lot of] style. I can see slow, crafty.”

Jokić went on to add that while there are similarities, Queen — and even someone like Alperen Åžengün — have their own style and talent.

When asked if players modelling themselves after him feels good, Jokić said: “Oh yeah, why not. I mean it feels good, you know, to leave a mark behind you [and have players look up to] your playing style.”

And while Jokić admitted that he watched players like Tim Duncan while growing up, he hasn’t been compared to one himself.

Queen is Aware of the Early Jokić Comparisons

In a previous interview with former NBA star Matt Barnes, Queen spoke about comparisons with.

“A lot of people say I play like Jokic,” Queen said. “Because we’re both slow … uh, both smart, we both can pass and we know the game.”

Of course, Queen has been confident in his own game and skills, focusing on crafting a new identity for himself.

A Round 1 No. 13 pick, Queen is averaging 10.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while shooting 47% from the field.
