Russell Westbrook’s NBA future appears more uncertain than ever. Once one of the league’s brightest stars and the face of triple-doubles, the former MVP remains unsigned deep into free agency this year.
Now, a new report suggests the nine-time NBA All-Star could begin the 2026-27 season without a team, raising fresh questions about whether the future Hall of Famer’s remarkable NBA career is nearing its end.

The latest update came from NBA insider Evan Sidery, who painted a bleak picture of Westbrook’s free-agent market on X.
“Russell Westbrook is not generating much, if any, interest on the free agent market. It appears to be a likely scenario Westbrook opens the 2026-27 season not signed. After being on seven teams in the past nine years, this could soon be the end of Westbrook’s Hall of Fame career.”

The report comes as Westbrook, who turns 38 in November, continues searching for his next NBA opportunity after completing his 18th season in the league.
Last season, Westbrook played for the Sacramento Kings on a one-year, $3.6 million veteran’s minimum contract. Individually, he remained productive, averaging more than 15 points and nearly seven assists per game.

However, those numbers came on a Kings team that won just 22 games, and the Kings have since shifted toward a younger core centered around first-round pick Darius Acuff Jr., making a reunion appear unlikely.
Westbrook’s situation has become increasingly complicated in recent weeks.
NBA insider Jake Fischer recently said he has not heard any meaningful updates regarding Westbrook’s free agency for weeks. Fischer also indicated that Sacramento is not expected to bring him back and dismissed speculation about a reunion with the Washington Wizards, noting that their roster moves have effectively taken them out of the running.
Meanwhile, another potential landing spot also appears to be cooling.
According to The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, an NBA coach recently advised Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra against signing Westbrook in free agency. Although Miami had been mentioned as a possible destination for veteran point guard help, that report suggests the Heat may not view the former MVP as the right fit.
The lack of serious suitors is a stark contrast to the player Westbrook once was.
During his prime with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Westbrook became one of the most explosive guards in NBA history. He won the 2017 NBA MVP award and made history by averaging a triple-double over an entire season. He also owns the NBA record for the most career triple-doubles, cementing his place among the greatest all-around guards the game has ever seen.
But time has inevitably changed his game.
At 37, Westbrook is no longer the MVP-caliber force who could command every possession. While he can still attack the basket and provide energy off the bench, his athleticism has declined, and his style of play has not translated into consistent winning in recent years.
Over the past three seasons alone, he has suited up for three different franchises, highlighting the challenge of finding a long-term role late in his career.
Even so, Westbrook’s résumé remains one of the most accomplished of his generation. Whether another team gives him a chance before the start of the 2026-27 season remains to be seen.
