The Denver Nuggets have perhaps the easiest problem to solve next summer: extending Nikola Jokić. The three-time MVP is eligible for a true supermax, but for anything to happen between the two sides, the desire for him to stay a Nugget has to be mutual.
The Nuggets have seen their greatest success since Jokić joined the team in 2015. He delivered their first title in franchise history and may bring another one soon. But what does Jokić think about the possibility of a supermax?
Does Nikola Jokić Want to Sign a Supermax with the Nuggets?
During Nuggets media day, Jokić was asked about his contract situation. While he commented on the current salary-cap landscape in the NBA, he made it clear where his priorities are.
“I mean, I don’t think about it,” Jokić told reporters. “I think those contract extensions come as a reward, as something that is natural to the sport. Especially in today’s NBA, how you see the salary cap is growing and everything.”\
He followed with an eight-word message to affirm his future with the Nuggets.
“My plan is to be a Nugget forever.”

Jokić is currently in the middle of a five-year, $276 million contract with the Nuggets. He is eligible for a supermax designated veteran extension, which would add three years worth $200 million to his current deal. If he waits until next offseason, he could make $80 million more, so that is likely the route this will take.
That could spark speculation about a problem with the Nuggets, which often happens when players don’t sign an extension at the first opportunity, especially with a superstar.
But Jokić left nothing to interpretation during media day. And why would he? Denver has done nearly everything it can to build a contender around the best player in franchise history. There have been some bumps along the way, but a title is a title, and three MVPs are three MVPs.
The Nuggets also had one of the NBA’s strongest offseasons by adding reinforcements in Cam Johnson, Bruce Brown, and Jonas Valančiūnas. Despite playoff struggles since winning the championship, Jokić remains the league’s most unsolvable player, keeping Denver in the title conversation.
They are coming off a playoff run in which they pushed Oklahoma City to the brink, and now they have an improved roster. Jokić is already a handful to defend, but surrounding him with more talent could be a death knell for the rest of the NBA. For that reason, the Nuggets have given him every incentive to stick around.
