NBA Insider Reveals How Nico Harrison Sold Luka Dončić Lakers Trade to Mavericks Owner Patrick Dumont

During a recent report, an NBA insider revealed how Nico Harrison convinced Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont of the Luka Dončić trade.

In February, the NBA world was stunned when the Dallas Mavericks traded superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers. The move left fans heartbroken and confused, searching for answers as to why the front office would part with its franchise player.

As a new season gets underway, the bitterness many felt has lingered, with new details emerging about how the shocking deal came together.

How Did Nico Harrison Convince Mavericks Ownership to Trade Luka Dončić?

A recent ESPN report from Tim MacMahon sheds light on the situation, revealing how former general manager Nico Harrison persuaded owner Patrick Dumont to approve the blockbuster deal. Harrison’s strategy, according to the report, was to build his case from a purely business perspective. A central part of his argument was Dončić’s upcoming five-year, $345 million supermax contract extension.

“That deal would be an awful investment, Harrison told Dumont, pointing to Doncic’s conditioning concerns, poor off-court habits and recurring calf strains, predicting that his body would break down,” MacMahon wrote.

Furthermore, MacMahon reported that a disagreement between Dončić’s camp and Harrison over the star’s recovery from a calf strain was used to cast doubt on his long-term loyalty to the Mavericks. This narrative directly challenged the widespread expectation that Dončić, a generational talent, would spend his entire career in Dallas.

To finalize his pitch, Harrison shifted the blame for the Mavericks’ five-game NBA Finals loss to the Boston Celtics onto Dončić’s defensive struggles. He then presented Dumont with a new vision: building the league’s best defense around Anthony Davis, a player Harrison had known since Davis was a teenager on the AAU circuit.

Why Were Mark Cuban and Dončić’s Agent Kept in the Dark?

The report also details the calculated secrecy behind the trade. Harrison convinced Dumont that all trade talks had to be kept away from the media, which meant excluding former majority owner Mark Cuban and Dončić’s agent, Bill Duffy, from the process. The primary concern was that Duffy could use any information as leverage to steer them away from the move.

“Looping in Cuban would have likely led to a leak, Harrison told Dumont,” MacMahon explained. “No one else knew. No one else had to know. Dumont bought it, and that was all that mattered.”

For many fans, the news confirmed their suspicions that Harrison orchestrated the trade while purposely blindsiding Cuban. Cuban himself has remained vocal about his opposition to the deal, viewing it as a massive mistake for the franchise.

In the aftermath, the two teams have headed in opposite directions. Dončić has settled in well with the Lakers, leading them to an 11-4 record and the fourth spot in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Mavericks, who selected Cooper Flagg in the 2025 NBA Draft, are struggling without Kyrie Irving. With a 4-11 record, they appear to be heading toward the lottery once again, a long way from their previous status as a contender.
