‘A Lot of Pressure’ — NBA Analyst Predicts ‘Flawed’ Knicks Will Undergo Major Roster Shake-Up Without East Finals Return

New York Knicks face immense playoff pressure, as an analyst warns an early exit could force a major roster shakeup this offseason.

The New York Knicks are in an interesting place heading into the playoffs. After years of mediocrity, they found the perfect recipe with Jalen Brunson and have done their best to surround him with the right pieces.

However, so far, that has only landed them in the Eastern Conference Finals, where losing to the Indiana Pacers prompted the firing of head coach Tom Thibodeau.

Now that they have once again entered the playoffs as the 3-seed, one analyst believes it is championship-or-bust for this group.

Why the New York Knicks Are Facing a Championship-or-Bust Postseason

The last time the Knicks reached the NBA Finals was more than a quarter-century ago, in 1999. The drought for an actual championship stretches even longer, 53 years ago, in 1973.

Throughout that timeframe, while they’ve had occasionally good seasons, they haven’t found consistent success. That was until their current iteration, where Brunson has led the squad to multiple playoff appearances as they continue to go a step further in the postseason.

But after dispatching the reigning champions, the Boston Celtics, in the second round last year, it seemed tailor-made for them to make the NBA Finals at the very least. Unfortunately, they bowed out to the Pacers and replaced Thibodeau with Mike Brown.

This season, they’ve improved their record, albeit still finishing as the 3-seed in the Eastern Conference. But the expectations are higher than ever. Danny Parkins of “First Things First” on FS1 laid the stakes for New York entering the playoffs.

“They fired Thibs for making the Eastern Conference Finals and upsetting Boston. Actions over words,” he argued before calling them a flawed team.

“I think the Knicks are a flawed team that has been better in some areas in the regular season that we’ll see if that pays dividends in the postseason… I don’t expect them to come out of the East, and I think there’s a lot of pressure on it,” Parkins said.

Finally, he asked the major question surrounding the organization. “If they don’t go as far as they did last year, are they gonna turn around and fire Mike Brown one year into that deal?”

Or the alternative, “It’s almost impossible to see them bringing back the Villanova Knicks plus Towns next year if they don’t get to where they got last year.”

One of the primary reasons for changing head coaches was to take that next step as a team. But a loss, potentially even before the Eastern Conference Finals, could derail them entirely.

And it could prompt radical changes within the group, or leave them without a clear direction.
