Nets’ Cam Thomas Tears Into NBA Insider With NSFW Rant After Disrespectful ‘Empty Calories Ball Hog’ Label

Brooklyn Nets Guard Cam Thomas fired shots at insider Zach Lowe, who called him an 'empty-calorie ball hog,' as contract negotiations continue.

Cam Thomas wasn’t about to let some NBA insider tear apart his game without a fight. The Brooklyn Nets guard found himself in the middle of a heated contract standoff when The Ringer’s Zach Lowe dropped the hammer, calling him an “empty calories ball-hog.” Thomas’ response? A fiery social media rant that left no doubt about where he stands.

Why Did Cam Thomas Explode on Zach Lowe?

During contract negotiations with the team, Thomas recently fired back against NBA insider Zach Lowe. The insider slammed him for his lack of assists in 2024-25, calling him an “empty calories ball-hog,” which set the Brooklyn star off on social media.

“The consensus? F*** you and the consensus. This is most likely the same consensus teams that can’t guard me and send double teams from the jump ball. Why are we double-teaming a guy who’s “not that good”? Make it make sense, please,” Thomas shared in a rant on X.

The 23-year-old’s frustration stems from ongoing criticism about his playmaking abilities. Thomas averaged 3.8 assists per game in 2024-25, which has drawn scrutiny from analysts and fans alike. However, his defensive argument cuts straight to the heart of the debate: Why do teams consistently send double teams his way if he’s ineffective?

What Makes Thomas Such a Polarizing Player?

Thomas presents a fascinating contradiction in modern basketball. According to Lowe, despite his apparent unwillingness to pass the ball, Thomas has been one of the most productive scorers for the Nets over the last few seasons, averaging over 20 points per game for the previous two seasons at just 23 years old.

But that scoring production comes with complications. Thomas only played in 25 games in 2024-25, missing a large chunk of the season. His most recent injury came in March against the Chicago Bulls, adding another concern for Brooklyn’s front office as they weigh his future.

The assist numbers tell part of the story. With 3.8 assists per game in 2024-25, Thomas has faced criticism over his lack of playmaking. However, fans of both the Nets and the NBA were quick to defend Thomas, claiming that the issue is the players he has around him.

“Empty calories ball hog label that they put on guys is largely a made-up thing. When your team is bad, somebody has to shoot. When your team is bad, you lose no matter what your stats look like,” one fan suggested, and others quickly called for the Nets to re-sign the guard.

“I bet Zach Lowe and whatever ‘anonymous’ cornball he’s speaking off never even played basketball, if you let Cam Thomas walk, you will lose your fan base. Sign your young Star. Do not be stupid.”

What Does Thomas’ Contract Situation Mean for Brooklyn?

Thomas is stuck in a stalemate with his team and nearing the end of his contract. The Nets guard’s qualifying offer for the next season stands at $12.1 million. If he accepts this, he can play things out and enter unrestricted free agency next summer. However, currently, there is no guarantee they will re-sign Thomas.

The uncertainty has created tension on both sides. Most recently, the Brooklyn star posted a cryptic story on his Instagram with a photo of a set of traffic lights, with music in the background, saying, “They don’t like me, then F**k them.” Some viewed this as an indirect jab at the Nets for refusing to pay him.

According to recent reports from Jake Fischer on the Stein Line, Brooklyn has yet to even significantly engage with the restricted free agent, while Brian Lewis of the New York Post was quick to explain that no sides are currently in a hurry to re-sign their RFAs.

“And the elephant in the room is Cam Thomas. While Nets fans are fretting, a league source said the sides are in no hurry, likely like all of the RFAs right now: Josh Giddey, Quentin Grimes and Jonathan Kuminga,” Lewis explained.

While there is uncertainty surrounding Thomas, the Nets guard isn’t taking any criticism sitting down, firing back at the likes of Lowe, who are quick to slam his game, with a large fanbase backing him, showing that he won’t be taken for granted in this situation.
