This NBA season is only four days old, and it’s already mired in drama and controversy following gambling-related arrests that ensnared both a current player and head coach. It was reported yesterday that guard Terry Rozier, head coach Chauncey Billups, and former player Damon Jones were all apprehended in a federal gambling probe.
Many wonder what happens next and whether anyone else will be the target of federal authorities. More information will come out, but with such a scandal blossoming, one of the NBA Players’ Association’s Vice Presidents, Jaylen Brown, gave his first thoughts on the matter.
What Did Jaylen Brown Have To Say About the NBA’s Gambling Scandal?
While talking with reporters on Oct. 24, Brown spoke about the negative consequences that stem from the culture of sports betting.
“They’re like, ‘You make X amount of money or X, Y and Z, you should be able to deal with all the extra negativity, the people approaching you about the parlays,'” Brown told reporters, per ESPN. “It creates a negative discourse around the game and players when people have money involved. … It’s leading to situations that we can avoid if more conversations were had right now.”
Brown also talked about how the NBA’s focus has been more on profits and not enough on the consequences of gambling or the players, for that matter.
“I don’t think once, from my conversations with the union, that the NBA has been like, ‘How can we protect players more with the environment?'” Brown said. “There’s been little to no conversation around that. It’s all about, a lot of times, ‘How can we increase business and increase revenue?’ I don’t think we’re having enough conversations about what is the aftermath or the consequences that some of that stuff has.”

Brown’s not wrong here. More importantly, with this scandal unfolding over the next few days, weeks, and potentially months, it almost feels like something like this was inevitable. The NBA has emphasized sports betting for the last few years, and a gambling-related scandal felt like it would happen one way or the other.
The NBA has a lot to learn from this situation, because active players like Rozier should never have been associated with any gambling-related controversy. Hopefully, when Brown and the players discuss the league’s next Collective Bargaining Agreement with the owners, both sides can do everything possible to prevent something like this from happening again.
