Gilbert Arenas Candidly Reveals NBC Execs Bashed ‘Inside the NBA’ for ‘Tearing Down the Product,’ Doing ‘Horrible Job’ Promoting Players

NBC execs reportedly slammed "Inside the NBA" for hurting the league’s image. Gilbert Arenas shared the inside scoop on the network’s bold stance.

Few sports shows in television history have been as beloved, or as controversial, as “Inside the NBA.” For decades, the TNT program has been the gold standard of basketball coverage, blending sharp analysis, humor, and unfiltered opinions from Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson.

But as the NBA’s media rights landscape shifts, “Inside the NBA” has come under scrutiny, not just from fans or league executives but now from potential competitors.

With NBC aggressively positioning itself to reclaim NBA broadcasting rights, former All-Star Gilbert Arenas recently revealed that some NBC executives aren’t exactly fans of how “Inside the NBA” and similar NBA personalities have covered the league.

NBC Executives Criticize ‘NBA on TNT’ Broadcast Approach

On a recent livestream, Arenas discussed the possibility of joining NBC’s NBA coverage team should the network secure rights in the upcoming media deal. While reflecting on the opportunity, he dropped some semi-spicy comments about how NBC executives view the impact of “Inside the NBA” on the league.

“It’s crazy out there, but I mean, it’s a good crazy that people want me, and I’m very thankful for the opportunities that I put myself back in position to be wanted,” Arenas said.

“Even if I don’t get the job, the fact that I’m even in the running. … I’m really grateful for that. No matter who NBC picks, what they plan on doing, I got the rundown, and Imma try to implement some of that s**t over here.”

Arenas then dropped a bombshell about how NBC executives perceive “Inside the NBA” and its impact on the league’s image.

“One thing they did say — and I did agree to – is that ‘Inside the NBA’ and some of the NBA personalities have done a horrible job in how NBA players are being viewed. Over the last decade or so, it’s been more about who they are outside the game versus the game itself and how great these guys are on the floor.

“They’ve been digging too much into their personal lives and using that as if it was about their skills. Tearing down the product. You’re talking s**t on the product that pays you.”

A Major Shift in NBA Media Coverage?

Arenas’ comments highlight a growing debate about how NBA players are portrayed in the media. “Inside the NBA” has built its reputation on brutally honest takes, often at the expense of current stars.

Barkley, in particular, has made headlines for his harsh critiques of today’s players, and while that unfiltered style has drawn fans in, it appears NBC sees it as a liability rather than an asset.

With the NBA’s next media rights deal looming, NBC seems focused on presenting the league in a different light, one that prioritizes celebrating the game rather than gossiping about off-court drama.
