Whether this ‘no fornication’ was a demand or simply a lighthearted guideline, the point was clear: sacrifice. Reportedly, his speech and the belief he had in his team resonated with the locker room, and they responded.

To be clear, Begley did write that Dolan said it jokingly. It’s also possible that Dolan was following a similar approach to how boxers prepare for a big fight, with abstinence and complete focus on preparation, free from distractions. Whether it was a motivational tactic, superstition, or otherwise, the result cannot be argued.
Coach Mike Brown also earned praise for his approach; As reported by Begley, he took each starter aside to discuss any lingering issues the team may have had.
After that, he called them all into a meeting to hash it out and ensure no grievances were made public, and that total focus was on the task at hand. Consequently, the Knicks reached NBA immortality some 10 weeks later.
While the “no fornication” talking point was amusing and unusual, the overriding message was clear. Everyone, from the owner to the coach and the starters, demanded accountability and total focus.
