The 2025-26 NBA season has already delivered enough chaos to last a decade. From the Los Angeles Clippers’ alleged salary cap circumvention controversy to reports surrounding high-stakes, mafia-linked poker games involving NBA figures, the league has constantly found itself under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
Still, somehow, the postseason itself had remained relatively smooth. Until one unexpected television blunder suddenly sent the NBA world into conspiracy mode.

ABC News’ Accidental ECF Knicks vs. Cavs Promo
On Saturday, eagle-eyed fans who were watching ABC News spotted a fully produced Eastern Conference Finals promo that featured the New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The problem is that the ECF opponent has not been decided yet. The Detroit Pistons and the Cavaliers are still locked in a 3-3 series, with Game 7 set for Sunday. In an instant, the NBA World started reacting to this promo on social media.
What Was the Reaction of the NBA World?
Before any major sporting event, media houses routinely produce multiple versions of the same promo. One for each possible outcome.
In this case, ABC almost certainly had two ECF promos ready to go. One featuring the Cavaliers and one featuring the Pistons. The plan would have been to air the correct version the moment Game 7 concluded. Unfortunately, someone at the network jumped the gun, and the wrong version made it to air.
Now, given the timing, the conspiracy-minded corner of the fanbase is convinced this is no accident.
“The fix is in y’all don’t be surprise if the refs calling bs tomorrow,” said one user, whereas another one commented, “Detroit vs Everybody.”

The Knicks punched their ticket to the Eastern Conference Finals days ago, after they swept the Philadelphia 76ers in four games.
Since then, New York has been sitting and watching the Pistons and Cavaliers slug it out. The series stands at 3-3 as mentioned before. Sunday’s Game 7 will decide who faces the Knicks, and now, thanks to ABC, Detroit fans feel the league has already made that choice for them.
“‘Cavs at Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals’… Over our d**d body,” wrote an influencer.

Nobody captured the Pistons fanbase’s collective mood better than Ku Khahil, host of the “Locked On Pistons” podcast.
Khahil perfectly stated that if Cleveland won Game 7, then the Pistons fans would parade the promo across every social media platform as evidence that the result was predetermined.
“I am not sitting here saying anything is rigged… But if the Pistons lose Sunday, Pistons fans are going to absolutely have their way with this,” wrote Khahil.

While most fans online were busy debating wild conspiracy theories, the admin of the popular sports media account “Awful Announcing” was completely puzzled by the situation. They literally questioned as to why ABC was hyping a Knicks-Cavaliers Eastern Conference Finals matchup.

“ABC wants to get you hyped up for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Knicks and the… Cavaliers?” the admin wrote.

Now, all eyes shift to Game 7, where the Cavaliers and Pistons will decide whether ABC’s accidental promo was merely premature or accidentally prophetic.
