The NBA is considered one of the most prominent professional basketball leagues in the world. However, the league’s geographic location ensures that the majority of active players are from the United States. While many European players have made it to the league and achieved great success, the fact remains that it is still largely inaccessible to many talented players from other continents.
Reports have now confirmed that the NBA will collaborate with FIBA to create a new European league. This bold joint venture has the potential to increase the reach and scope of basketball at a global level.

NBA Continues To Expand Its Presence in Europe With the Proposed New League
Under the leadership of Commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA has experienced steady growth over several years. Now, the league has decided to invest in the creation of another league, something that will significantly benefit it in the future.
The specific details on this European league are yet to be confirmed. It has been tentatively decided that a 16-team model, featuring 12 permanent franchises alongside four qualification spots, is being considered as a potential format.
Tim Reynolds from Yahoo Sports reported that the proposed league structure will incorporate permanent team placements and a “merit-based pathway” for annual qualification.
“This system allows teams to earn their spot through FIBA’s Basketball Champions League or a dedicated end-of-season tournament, ensuring any club within a FIBA-affiliated European league has an opportunity to compete,” Reynolds added. The Oct 2027 is targeted to be the inaugural season of the league.
Talking about the format, Andreas Zagklis, FIBA secretary general, said, “The format of the league respects European sport model principles by offering any ambitious club on the continent a fair pathway to the top.”
Since Europe has multiple countries, it is safe to say that there will be significant demand for an elite basketball league. The NBA’s decision to invest in a European league is also proof that the league respects international talent and is eager to foster their growth.
Notably, the launch of the new league was in talks since a New York news conference earlier this year, where Zagklis and Silver openly committed to it. Silver had asserted, “Our conversations with various stakeholders in Europe have reinforced our belief that an enormous opportunity exists around the creation of a new league on the continent.”
The move adds to the NBA’s expanding presence in Europe. The league has regular-season games scheduled for mid-January in Berlin and London, featuring the Memphis Grizzlies and Orlando Magic.
