NBA World Reacts to Bucks Star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Performance in His Highly Anticipated Return vs. Celtics

NBA fans react as Giannis Antetokounmpo returns in Bucks blowout loss to Celtics without Jaylen Brown.

Giannis Antetokounmpo finally returned to the floor after missing approximately five weeks with a right calf strain. The spotlight was supposed to be on the two-time MVP’s comeback at Fiserv Forum. Instead, the night spiraled into a 108–81 blowout loss to the Boston Celtics.

It was a game that quickly shifted the conversation from comeback optimism to full-blown criticism across the NBA landscape.

NBA World Sounds Off After Blowout Loss Upon Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Anticipated Return

Yes, everyone was really anticipating Giannis’ return. But what happened after this massive loss? It was brutal.

Sirius XMNBA host, David Shepard wrote, “Give Giannis credit for coming back & NOT quitting on the Bucks, but this is clearly an organization that is lottery bound! To get shown up by Hugo Gonzalez IN Milwaukee without the Celtics premier players is beyond disappointing!”

But there’s a hint of frustration in his voice. It likely stems from Milwaukee getting dismantled at home by a Celtics team that was missing key pieces.

Ben Handler of Chuddy’s Corner added some true facts. Even when the Celtics were without Jaylen Brown and resting Neemias Queta, the game was still in Boston’s control. Giannis and the Bucks had no answer.

On a live session, Handler pointed out that “Celtics obliterate the Bucks w/o Jaylen & Queta. Giannis was no match for Hugo!”

The Athletic’s Esfandiar Baraheni kept it blunt: “Giannis comes back, and the Bucks get absolutely smoked… WOOF.”

Yes, a 27-point loss in a return game amplifies every concern about Milwaukee’s trajectory.

Barstool’s Dan Greenberg took the celebratory route from Boston’s side centered around rookie Hugo González, who stole the spotlight.

Popular sports influencer and content creator, ChrisSmoove, already has his take ready. He, too, believes that the absence of Boston’s premier scorer made the margin even more glaring.

The underlying theme across reactions wasn’t just Giannis’ stat line. It was the optics around his long-awaited return and the result of the matchup.

A contender can’t look overwhelmed at home, especially against a short-handed rival.

Hugo González Steals the Show as Bucks and Giannis Spiral

While Antetokounmpo posted a respectable 19 points on 7-of-18 shooting and 11 rebounds in 25 minutes, the night belonged to Boston’s rookie.

González exploded for a career-high 18 points and 16 rebounds in just his third start. The 28th overall pick became the second Celtics rookie after Larry Bird to record an 18-point, 16-rebound outing. He finished +27 and played with a poise that overshadowed Milwaukee’s franchise player.

Boston ripped off a 24–5 run spanning the first and second quarters and never looked back. The Celtics pushed the lead to 22 before halftime and responded to a brief Bucks push in the third with 15 straight points.

For context, Milwaukee is now 15-16 in games Antetokounmpo plays this season and 11-18 without him. Even with their superstar back, the team sits 11th in the Eastern Conference and has dropped three straight games. And all by at least 23 points.

Giannis’ return on Monday was on schedule medically. Competitively, though, the Bucks looked anything but ready.
