NBA Announces Major Change to Referees’ Equipment Ahead of New Season

The NBA is testing a new officiating system during the 2025-26 preseason to improve referee consistency and minimize in-game stoppages.

The NBA is seeking to enhance its officiating ahead of the 2025-26 season by testing new referee equipment that could improve game flow and benefit both fans and players.

Officials have drawn heightened attention this past week for participating in scrimmages and training camps, part of the league’s new mandate to help teams ramp up more effectively after the offseason. However, another innovation was also spotted early in the preseason, sparking intrigue and raising a few eyebrows.

What Officiating Change Is the NBA Experimenting With During Preseason?

On Sunday, NBA insider Marc Stein confirmed that the league “is equipping all three referees on the floor with earpieces for every preseason game in NBA arenas.” He noted that the trial is the “latest step in NBA earpiece testing” designed to further synergy among officiating crews by “connecting the refs to each other and the Replay Center in Secaucus, [New Jersey].”

Stein’s intel comes after an image of referee Marc Davis recently went viral during an exhibition contest, leading to a mix of fan reactions.

NBA viewers have long voiced frustration over drawn-out in-game delays as officials confer with the Replay Center to review fouls and clarify possession on out-of-bounds calls. Instant in-ear communication without needing to leave the court and head to the monitor should streamline that process and potentially reduce the number of mistakes on a nightly basis.

While the change offers promise, not everyone is convinced it’s purely quality-driven. Some skeptics anticipate that such a directive may make it easier for officials to fix games. A subset of fans believe the NBA favors big market teams and leans into certain narratives, perpetuating the ongoing joke that it follows a script assigned by commissioner Adam Silver.

With the league’s strategic push toward betting integration becoming increasingly prominent, some viewers will undoubtedly take exception to referees wearing earpieces if they believe it’s costing them money.

It’s uncertain if the NBA will implement the change full-time in the upcoming regular season. Regardless, Silver and Co. appear intent on modernizing how games are called and fostering referees’ rapport with players amid a growing disconnect.

According to Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press, the league desires “a positive, respectful relationship among players, coaches and officials.” Increased dialogue between referees and teams at training camp and quicker in-game resolutions in the heat of the moment should help achieve just that.

Preseason is set to run until Oct. 17, giving the league just under two weeks to continue experimenting until the 2025-26 campaign’s Oct. 21 start date.
