The Dallas Mavericks find themselves in urgent need of a point guard heading into the 2025–26 NBA season. With Kyrie Irving expected to miss significant time due to a torn ACL suffered in March, their guard rotation is thin. Most of Dallas’ backcourt depth consists of shooting guards, leaving a hole at the point guard spot.
Given the team’s lack of financial flexibility, many expect the Mavs to explore the trade market to address the position. However, one veteran free agent could be a realistic option, according to a league insider.
Malcolm Brogdon Could Be a Potential Signing for the Mavericks
During a recent episode of The Putback with Ian Begley, the SNY insider was asked whether Malcolm Brogdon could be a potential target for the New York Knicks. While Begley wasn’t sold on the Knicks being a strong candidate, he suggested that the Mavericks are a more likely landing spot.
“I can’t give you a definitive answer, but just based on the history there and the context of it all, I’d be a little bit surprised if it was [Brogdon] that they turned to at the backup point guard role”, he said.
Begley continued, “I do know he’s on Dallas’ list. Dallas, obviously, needing a point guard with Kyrie Irving rehabbing from surgery. I don’t know if he’s at the top of Dallas’ list or somewhere in the middle, but he is there. The Mavs are gonna dictate a lot of that point guard movement.”
Brogdon would bring a steady veteran presence and playmaking to a Dallas roster that could use both, especially early in the season. However, his injury history remains a concern. The 2017 NBA Rookie of the Year has never played a full 82-game season in his nine-year career.
In just 24 games with the Washington Wizards this season, the 32-year-old had a solid showing, averaging 12.7 points, 4.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 43.3% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range. These numbers would certainly help steady the ship for the Mavs.

With Cooper Flagg on the horizon, and Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II anchoring the frontcourt, Brogdon shouldn’t have much trouble setting the table for his teammates while Irving recovers.
While there may be more appealing free agent options than Brogdon, he’s still expected to draw interest from multiple teams. The Wizards guard has reportedly been labeled a “primary target” for the Los Angeles Clippers, meaning if Dallas hesitates in extending an offer, they could lose him to a more aggressive suitor.
