PFSN’s Alex Kennedy speculated earlier this month that, after unexpectedly trading for Jaylen Brown, the Philadelphia 76ers could pursue LeBron James in free agency. Almost immediately after Kennedy’s tweet, The Athletic’s Tony Jones reported that the 76ers “expressed interest in acquiring” the former Los Angeles Lakers star.
As James weighs his options with the 76ers now firmly on his list of suitors, an NBA insider offered insight into the growing buzz surrounding the 22-time All-Star’s potential move to Philadelphia.
LeBron James Joining 76ers Could Finally End Franchise’s 43-Year Title Drought
Rich Paul, James’ agent and the CEO of Klutch Sports Group, shared on the “Game Over” podcast with co-host Max Kellerman last week that Philadelphia is among the teams his client is considering. Paul added that 76ers star guard Tyrese Maxey, who is also represented by Klutch Sports, is a player the four-time NBA champion “loves.”
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, who has extensively covered James and the Lakers, reported Wednesday on the growing buzz surrounding the future Hall of Famer potentially landing in Philadelphia.
”I can’t tell you how many high school teammates, cousins, my brother, other family members have reached out to me in the last two weeks saying, ‘Is Philadelphia really a possibility?’ The Philadelphia sports fans would absolutely love LeBron James, especially if he finished the job,” McMenamin said on “NBA Today.”
“There’s a 43-year championship drought for the Sixers. It’ll be 44 by the time — if they hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy in June of 2027. If LeBron was able to see through and make his career four different stops with four championship trophies, that further cements everything that he’s done.”

If James goes to Philadelphia, he would join a star-studded lineup that features Brown, Maxey, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe. That level of offensive firepower would make the 76ers one of the favorites to win the 2027 championship and end the franchise’s agonizing 43-year wait for another title.

However, McMenamin pointed out that joining Philadelphia would be a higher-pressure option for James than signing with a team like the Golden State Warriors, who have already won four championships during his career.
McMenamin also believes a return to Cleveland, where James captured the 2016 title, wouldn’t carry as much pressure because of the nostalgic appeal and storybook ending such a move could provide.
The stars seem to be aligning for James to sign with the 76ers, so the NBA world could soon find out whether the speculation becomes a reality.
