The NBA is nearing its 80th anniversary, marking nearly eight decades of evolution marked by both triumphs and challenges. Over the years, the league has experienced periods of volatility, with notable peaks and valleys in popularity and performance. One such high point came in 2010, when opening-month viewership surged following LeBron James’ highly publicized decision to join the Miami Heat.
Today, the league appears to be reaching yet another all-time high, signaling a new era of growth and engagement.

NBA Breaks Viewership Records
Fifteen years after setting a viewership record during the opening month of the 2010 season, the NBA has officially surpassed that milestone.
According to the league, 60 million viewers in the United States watched NBA games across NBC/Peacock, ESPN, and Amazon Prime Video during the first month of the season.
More than 60 million people in the U.S. have watched NBA games across NBC/Peacock, ESPN and Amazon Prime Video through the first month of the season, the most viewers for an opening month in 15 years.

This surge is largely attributed to the widespread growth of modern social media platforms, which have played a significant role in directing viewers to the league’s broadcast partners. While social media did exist in 2010, it lacked the technological sophistication and global reach of today’s digital ecosystem.
This milestone does not include data from the 2011–12 season, which began on Christmas Day, a period traditionally associated with elevated viewership. Nonetheless, the current figures represent a positive development for the league, especially amid prior concerns that the NBA might struggle to recapture its former momentum.
The league also announced that it recorded 30 billion total views across social media platforms — its highest ever for the first month of a season. Today, the NBA benefits from a broader array of platforms, including Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, making it easier to distribute content and engage fans worldwide.

According to data from the 2010–11 season, the NBA recorded 103 million unique viewers during the regular season. As of the first month of the current campaign, the league is already just 43 million viewers short of that mark.
With the high-profile Christmas Day slate still ahead, the NBA appears well-positioned to surpass its previous season-long total.
