NBA Executive Predicts ‘Major Change’ To Celtics’ Roster With Jayson Tatum Out: Insider Reveals 2 Potential Trade Partners

With Jayson Tatum out, the Celtics face tough offseason decisions amid cap issues. An NBA insider revealed two teams to watch as trade partners.

The Boston Celtics are ͏bracing͏ for a challenging offseason after star forward Jayson Tatum suffered͏ a devastating Achilles injury ͏in Game 4 of the ͏Eastern Conference Semifinals͏. His absence could trigger significant roster shifts as͏ the defending NBA champions navigate an ͏increasingly complex financial landscape and potential trade ͏scenarios.

Celtics Face Roster Shake-Up After Jayson Tatum Injury

In what was a stellar Game 4 performance, Tatum dropped 42 points before being helped off the floor and exiting Madison Square Garden in a wheelchair.

The Celtics confirmed that Tatum suffered a torn right Achilles tendon and underwent surgery. With Boston already operating above the second apron, tough decisions loom.

NBA insider Marc J. Spears weighed in on the situation on ESPN, revealing that rival executives are expecting Boston to make major changes to its roster — and that was the case even before Tatum’s career-altering injury.

The main reason?

“A payroll where you have five players making at least $28 million or more, [including] two superstars making $50 million or more,” Spears said, referring to the money owed to Jaylen Brown ($53,142,264), Tatum ($54,126,380), Jrue Holiday ($32,400,000), Kristaps Porzingis ($30,731,707), and Derrick White ($28,100,000) next season.

Spears pointed out that two Western Conference teams are closely monitoring the Celtics’ situation as potential trade suitors: the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs.

“The two teams I’m keeping an eye on for a couple of these guys, perhaps, is the Houston Rockets. Why? Ime Udoka is there, and they have certainly been rumored to want to upgrade their roster. He knows these guys and they probably would be attracted to returning to play with him,” Spears said.

“Another team is the San Antonio Spurs. They’ve got the No. 2 pick, and I’m told that the Spurs are quite happy with the talent that’s available at No. 2, but they’re going to explore potential trades as well.”

San Antonio and Houston have the draft capital and young assets to emerge as interesting trade partners should talks begin. It’s worth noting that the Spurs are very familiar with White, as the guard spent the first four-and-a-half seasons of his NBA career in San Antonio before he was dealt to Boston.

Meanwhile, the Rockets concluded their season with the second-best record in the Western Conference and are looking to strengthen an already solid young core. As Spears mentioned, a connection exists between the two franchises since Rockets head coach Udoka previously coached the Celtics.

For the veterans, Al Horford becomes a free agent this summer, while Porzingis will be up for a new contract next offseason. With Tatum out for the foreseeable future and plenty of financial limitations due to the second apron, Boston’s ͏front ͏office ͏will have some tough calls to make this summer.

It remains to be seen just how different the Celtics’ roster will look next season, but it certainly seems that changes are coming.
