Who Are Adou Thiero’s Parents? Get To Know the Lakers Rookie’s Mother and Father Amid 2025 NBA Draft

Adou Thiero’s NBA Draft journey began long before college -- learn how his parents’ sacrifice and basketball roots shaped his path to the L.A. Lakers.

Tonight’s NBA Draft doubled as a family milestone, but Adou Thiero’s rise started long before the Los Angeles Lakers called his name. The 6-foot-8 wing took a winding path through Kentucky and Arkansas, but his journey traces back to two determined parents who made a bold decision years before he ever touched a basketball.

They left Mali chasing a future in basketball — and wound up laying the groundwork for their son’s path to the pros.

Mali Roots to NBA Dreams: How Adou Thiero’s Parents Shaped His Path to the Los Angeles Lakers

Mariam Sy and Almamy Thiero arrived in the United States in the early 2000s with basketball scholarships and big aspirations. Mariam, a 6-foot-4 forward, starred at Oklahoma City University, where she averaged 16.3 points and 9.2 rebounds while shooting 54% from the field.

Almamy, a 6-foot-9 shot-blocker who once ranked among the top prep power forwards in the country, began his college career at Memphis under John Calipari before transferring to Duquesne.

The two met on the summer recruiting circuit. A friendship turned into a relationship built around shared goals — both on and off the court.

When Mariam became pregnant at 24, the couple was still in school, juggling practice, jobs, and coursework. With no family nearby, they made a difficult decision to send their newborn, Adou, to live with Almamy’s parents in Mali while they completed their education.

They graduated, married in 2004, and Mariam was selected in the second round of the 2006 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics. Knee injuries derailed her professional career, but the couple returned to Mali, retrieved their toddler, and brought him back to the U.S., settling in the Pittsburgh suburb of Sewickley, Pa.

Almamy’s playing career also ended early — blood clots, a torn ACL, and a fractured tibia kept him off the floor. But he turned to coaching, launching an AAU program and mentoring dozens of prospects across Western Pennsylvania. Mariam joined him on the bench, offering instruction on rebounding and footwork.

Together, they raised four children and tested everything they preached on their oldest.
By his senior year at Quaker Valley High, Adou was stuffing the stat sheet: 23.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 3.9 steals, and 2.3 blocks per game. He set the school’s single-game scoring record with 44 points and finished third on the program’s all-time scoring list. His production and defensive versatility earned him WPIAL Player of the Year honors.

That success earned him a spot at Kentucky in 2022. As a sophomore, Thiero posted a double-double against Kansas and led the Wildcats in rebounds eight times. His 7-foot wingspan and defensive instincts caught the attention of NBA scouts, even as his offensive game continued to develop.

When Calipari left for Arkansas, Thiero followed — this time for a larger role. At Arkansas, he averaged 15.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.6 steals per game while shooting 54.5%. He led the team in both scoring and rebounding.

Now, the 21-year-old begins his professional career with the Lakers, bringing with him a backstory rooted in sacrifice, patience, and two parents who built their son’s future before he ever stepped on a court.
