As the excitement around NCAA March Madness begins to build, college basketball teams are starting to raise their level of play at just the right time.
One such performance came on Saturday night, when the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball delivered a statement win. While the team celebrated its 22nd victory of the season, it was one player who quickly became the center of attention.

Freshman Darryn Peterson Stunned Everyone With His Gameplay
The Jayhawks secured a (104–85) victory over the Kansas State Wildcats men’s basketball in what could potentially be Darryn Peterson’s final appearance at Allen Fieldhouse. The young star finished the night with 27 points and led Kansas’s offensive charge throughout the game.

Following the game, draft analysts and basketball observers quickly turned their attention to Peterson, whose performance sparked a discussion about his future at the next level.
Peterson was quite efficient on Saturday night. In addition to his 27 points, his 10-of-15 shooting performance demonstrated how comfortably he can control the pace of a game while producing offensively. One analyst even declared his long-term confidence in Peterson.
“I understand the cases for other prospects, but Darryn Peterson will be my wire-to-wire #1 prospect,” said Sports Illustrated’s draft expert Jam Hines.

There were several moments during Saturday’s game that showed exactly how impressive Peterson was. In one sequence during the first quarter, Peterson cleverly faked a jumper while looking toward a teammate as if he were about to pass.
Instead of completing the pass, he held onto the ball before eventually moving it along, leading to a scoring play by another teammate. The sequence showcased his awareness, and NBA analysts could not help but praise him.

“Tremendous day from Darryn Peterson. He does such a good job of flowing between on and off ball roles and keeping the ball moving,” said analyst Tyler Metcalf.
Another prominent voice in draft discussions, Sam Vecenie, also highlighted the significance of Peterson’s performance.
“Thought today was the best Darryn Peterson game of the year,” Vecenie wrote on X.
Thought today was the best Darryn Peterson game of the year. Obviously against K-State, but more than anything, thought we saw him shifting gears and changing speeds more consistently than we have all year. Played at pace and tempo w/ the herky-jerky stuff we saw at lower levels

The statement carried extra weight considering Peterson’s previous outing. In Kansas’ earlier game against the Arizona State Sun Devils men’s basketball, the freshman finished with 15 points despite playing 34 minutes. While that performance was solid, it lacked the same explosive impact.
Saturday’s 27-point effort, however, felt like a clear step forward.
While most analysts were busy praising Peterson for his standout performance, not everyone viewed the game purely through a lens of excitement.
One draft analyst acknowledged Peterson’s talent and impact, but also noted that the freshman prospect could still be considered a high-risk selection: “Darryn Peterson is the biggest high-risk, high-reward guy in a long time… Could pass on him at one and really regret it but almost too risky to draft first… Don’t envy the decision makers in those positions.”
With March approaching and the postseason looming, performances like this are exactly what elevate players into national conversations.
