The Emirates NBA Cup adds more intensity to the regular season. Fans can watch more high-stakes competition instead of having to wait until the postseason in April. The teams that advance to the knockout stage enter a playoff-like, “win-or-go-home” situation rather than a possible seven-game series.
Fans might ask, “Well, if the players are not competing for an NBA Title, what incentive do they have to give it their all?” The answer is simple- money.

How Much Will the NBA Cup Winner Receive?
The NBA Cup final takes place next week on Tuesday, Dec. 16, in Las Vegas. Neither team has a built-in home-court advantage, and the final two teams will play 83 games during the 2025-26 regular season. The cup championship does not count toward players’ statistics, but if they win it, it certainly counts in their favor financially.
Players on the last cup squad standing receive around a $500,000 bonus in addition to their contracts. While established superstars with big contracts make much more annually, this tournament can be highly lucrative for anyone. This tournament gives younger players, who may have signed a two-way deal or remain on their rookie contract, a chance for a gigantic payout.
Players on teams that reach the NBA Cup Finals, semifinals, and quarterfinals also receive bonuses. Players receive around $200,00 for finishing as runners-up, $100,000 for losing in the semifinals, and $50,000 for advancing to the knockout round.
The NBA Cup provides teams with high-intensity environments to test their skills in high-stakes situations. Younger, inexperienced teams often cannot execute at the same level down the stretch of tight games as squads with veteran leadership.
The postseason magnifies this scenario, but the in-season tournament gives teams without much playoff experience a chance to experience a playoff-like atmosphere before the end of the regular season.
Teams Can Use the NBA Cup As a Step Toward Contention
The Indiana Pacers beat the Milwaukee Bucks to advance to the 2023 NBA Cup Final but fell to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Neither Indiana nor Milwaukee advanced past the group stage for the 2025-26 campaign, but the Pacers’ deep cup run gave them valuable experience. It set the table for their excellent postseason runs in 2024 and 2025. Indiana fell just one game short of the NBA Championship last season. Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle spoke about his team’s invaluable run to the NBA Finals two years ago.
“Those experiences helped for sure … There were some real playoff simulations … The part about going to Vegas and playing there, that was different, but there was certainly the exposure, the stage, all that … All those experiences help a young team,” expressed Carlisle.
Another young squad could make a cup run just like the Pacers, but players will want to win one more game to earn the big prize money.
