After entering the 2026 NBA Draft with uncertainty, Darryn Peterson was ultimately selected No. 2 overall by the Utah Jazz.
Shortly after, four-time NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins had high praise for the young guard, comparing Peterson to none other than Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

Peterson’s elite three-level scoring and his 20.2 points-per-game average at Kansas ensured that the 19-year-old would hear his name called early in the draft despite concerns about his durability. Sure enough, the Canton, Ohio, native went second overall as the Jazz picked him up to bolster their offense with a knockdown shooter.
The league showered Peterson with praise, excited to see how the young guard would fit into Utah’s system. But it was Cousins’ words that stood out from the rest. Frankly, if you compare someone to Bryant, it’s bound to turn heads. Bryant was an extraordinary three-level scorer, and his offensive arsenal was unmatched.
Cousins sees flashes of that same skill set in Peterson.
“I can see the Kobe in his game. I can see the self-confidence. I can see the isolation package,” Cousins said.
“Everything that we loved about Kobe, this kid shows flashes of. Super, super talented kid. Probably the most talented in the draft. He didn’t do himself any favors with the situation at Kansas. Yeah. Just too talented to pass up on.”
Cousins also expressed his excitement about seeing Peterson play alongside Jazz guard Keyonte George.
“I am concerned with the combination of him and Keyonte George,” Cousins said. “I want to see what that looks like with those two on the floor together. They both need the ball in their hands to be themselves, so that’s something to be figured out. But, I mean, undeniable talent.”

Peterson and George have the potential to form a dynamic backcourt for the Jazz. While George is the team’s primary point guard, Peterson is also capable of running the offense. His downhill scoring and ability to create both on and off the ball could allow him to take on significant playmaking duties.
But above all, Peterson himself believes he is going to sync in well alongside George. Utah Jazz insider Chandler Holt shared Peterson’s bold comments on his fit with the Jazz.
“Keyonte and I will be one of the best backcourts in the NBA,” Peterson said.
To be likened to Bryant is a privilege only a few NBA players have enjoyed. However, that comparison also brings immense expectations. Peterson’s lone season with the Jayhawks highlighted his ability to live up to the hype. It will be interesting to see whether he can elevate his game and skill set further to withstand the NBA’s intensity and stand out at the highest level.
