Just over one year ago, the Dallas Mavericks traded star player Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal that broke the NBA world. In that trade, the Mavericks received Max Christie, a 2029 first-round pick, and Anthony Davis.
After appearing in just 29 games in a calendar year, Davis is now on his way to the Washington Wizards in a multi-player trade that will involve Washington sending back two first-round draft picks and three second-round picks for the former Lakers’ star.
Anthony Davis Trade Is a Step Towards Mavericks’ Rebuild After Losing Luka Dončić
Following a recent report from ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Mavericks were revealed to be sending Davis to Washington. In exchange, Dallas received Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, Marvin Bagley III, 2 first-round picks, and 3 second-rounders.
Following that, the final results of Dallas’s blockbuster deal with the Lakers for Dončić have been revealed. After the trade that sent Davis to Washington, this is the return the Mavericks have received for sending Dončić to Los Angeles.

Following the trade that sent Dončić to the Lakers, Christie, who is just 22 and making under $9 million for the next two seasons, has averaged 13.1 points and 3.4 rebounds this year. Arguably, making him the most successful player to come from the original trade.
Meanwhile, Davis’s time in Dallas has been dominated by injuries. He had surgery to repair a detached retina in his right eye last summer. Following that, Davis then strained his left calf in Dallas’ fifth game of this season, which caused him to miss the next 14 games.
According to reports, the former Lakers’ star is owed $58.5 million next season and holds a $62.8 million player option in 2027-28.
Following the trade, one of the biggest hopes in Dallas was that Davis and Kyrie Irving would take to the court together. However, with Davis’s injuries and Irving’s ACL tear, they only shared the court once.
According to recent reports, Irving is set to return to practice in the coming weeks. The Mavericks’ star tore his ACL last March. However, he will return to practice just under a year after tearing his ACL, but he won’t be sharing the court with Davis.
Instead, following the deal that sent Davis to Washington, the Mavericks’ star will have four new teammates. Included in the deal was Middleton, who has averaged 10.3 points,3.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists this year.
While the Mavericks may still have some moves to make ahead of the NBA trade deadline with their new players and draft capital, as it stands, these are the current returns from the Dončić trade. The trade deadline is set to expire on Feb. 5, 2026, at 3 p.m. ET.
