‘This Is Home’ – Mavericks’ Former No. 1 Pick Mark Aguirre Sheds Tears During Emotional Reunion in Dallas

Dallas Mavericks' 1981 No. 1 Overall Pick Marg Aguirre in tears as he watched his former team draft his successor in Cooper Flagg.

Former Dallas Mavericks No. 1 Pick Mark Aguirre recently shed tears during an emotional reunion in Dallas during a 2025 NBA Draft watch party, and for good reason. Years after hearing his name called out as the first overall pick, he watched the Mavericks get the chance to repeat the occasion.

Dallas won the draft lottery despite only 1.8% odds, putting them in a position to select Cooper Flagg, who was widely considered the top prospect in this draft class following a historic season with Duke, although eventually losing out to Houston in the final four.

Mavericks’ Former No. 1 Pick Mark Aguirre in Tears Watching History Repeat

Dallas selected Aguirre in the 1981 NBA draft. In eight seasons with the Mavs,  Aguirre scored the third-most points in franchise history, 13,930, behind Rolando Blackman’s 16,643 points and Dirk Nowitzki’s 31,560.

However, his exit from Dallas was bitter. There have been reports of conflicts between him and the team. So, midway through the 1988-89 season, on Feb. 15, 1989, Aguirre was unceremoniously traded to the Detroit Pistons. Ironically, after the trade, Detroit won back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990. But Aguirre’s ties to the franchise have been understandably thin.

That changed during the Mavericks’ watch party for the 2025 NBA Draft. According to a tweet by Mavs insider Noah Wever, Aguirre revealed that he was “shocked” when some current members of the organization reached out to him “in a great at way.”

“This is home, I’ve been wanting to do a lot of things, but there’s not another feeling I can get being here other than that I’m home, I never believed this would happen,” Aguirre said, wiping tears, to a cheering crowd, as he detailed how special the moment was.

“Leaving in the way that I did, traded the way that I was, with Detroit, and then winning titles with them, it seems that I was just separated from Dallas, and I didn’t know how I would get back.” The former No. 1 Pick explained, breaking down in tears.

Years on from the moment he was drafted, the Mavericks are hoping that their newest No. 1 overall pick, Cooper Flagg, will have a similar impact on the organization, after hearing his name called out as expected with the first overall pick.

“He’s no joke, he’s for real, I expect him to fit right in and have no problems doing what he needs to do to make this team complete. It’s going to be nice for them to come right in and play his position.” Aguirre shared his thoughts on his successor during the event.

Spending just one year with Duke, Flagg made an instant impact for the side, taking them to the final four of the NCAA championship, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists, making it one of the best seasons from a Freshman in NCAA History.

Now, the Mavs and Nico Harrison will expect a similar year from the former Blue Devils star in his rookie season in the NBA, as they look to fill the hole left behind following the infamous trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Lakers in February.
